Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s will make his first mandatory defence of the WBC Light Middleweight title against British fighter Ryan Rhodes on June 18th in Guadalajara, Mexico. Champion Alvarez is the heavy 1.118* favourite to defend the title he won against Mathew Hatton back in March, as he aims to dominate the weight division.
Alvarez enjoys a rock star following in Mexico and will want to impress on his home turf, as he sets about defending his title for the first time.
Last time out, Alvarez confidently defeated Hatton, and in the process proved his boxing class was too much for the brother of infamous Ricky Hatton.
Going into the fight with Rhodes, the 20-year-old boasts an unblemished record of 36-0, 26 KO, and he will be desperate to notch-up his 37th win in front of his loyal Mexican fan base.
On the other hand, former “Spice Boy”, Ryan Rhodes (6.510*) is a veteran fighter at 34-years-old, and will be desperate for one last chance to become the world champion.
Rhodes burst onto the British scene in 1995, winning his first 16 bouts (13 by stoppage) and picking up the British title at 154 pounds.
He moved up to middleweight in 1997 to challenge Otis Grant for a major alphabet belt, but lost a 12-round decision in Sheffield. It was the beginning of a rough patch in Rhodes’ career, as he was knocked out in the second round by Jason Matthews in 1999, and stopped in three by Lee Blundell in 2002.
Despite these setbacks, Rhodes dropped back down to 154 pounds. In his first fight back at light middleweight, he knocked out Gary Woolcombe in the ninth round, reclaiming the British title — 12 years after he first won it. And his 2009 war with Jamie Moore netted him the European belt.
Rhodes (45-4, 31KO) has finally got his long-overdue title shot; the question remains whether or not he can take advantage. There is no doubt that Rhodes is Alvarez’s toughest fight to date, and it would be unwise for the Mexican to underestimate his opponent.
