Week 1 of the NFL season is nearly over and while we saw some superb performances, there were some surprisingly poor efforts as well.

Here is “The Good and the Bad” of Week 1 laid out in Dave B’s 2010’s inaugural Studs and Duds list.

STUDS OF THE WEEK

Peyton Manning – Indianapolis Colts – 40/57, 433 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Colts were trailing most of the game and Manning did his best to bring them back. He attempted 57 passes without an interception. Incredible fantasy numbers for an incredible player.

Arian Foster – Houston Texans – 33 rushes, 231 yards and 3 touchdowns. It was an amazing performance for Foster who exceeded all expectations. He single handedly put 21 points on the board and was responsible for chewing up much of the clock, keeping the Colts offense off the field.

Other Studs:

QBs

Carson Palmer – Cincinnati Bengals – 34/50, 345 yards, two touchdowns and 1 interception Palmer gained most of his yardage in garbage time but for Fantasy purposes, who cares? He still ripped it up and made his owners happy.

Jay Cutler – Chicago Bears – 23/35, 372 yards, two touchdowns, one interception. Cutler was aided by some long screen passes but 372 yards is incredible. Mike Martz may have an effect on him after all. Temper expectations, the Lions have the worst secondary in the NFL but for now, Cutler is a Stud.

Tom Brady – New England Patriots – 25/35, 258 yards, three touchdowns. Brady didn’t have to do too much after the first half but still ended up with three tds. With Welker back and Moss having a chip on his shoulder, Brady is a Stud.

RBs

Chris Johnson – Tennessee Titans – 27 rushes, 142 yards, two touchdowns. Surprised? Johnson got the majority of his yards on one 76 yard scamper but was still by far the best player on the field.

Matt Forte – Chicago Bears – 17 rushes, 50 yards, seven catches, 151 yards and two touchdowns. Forte had one huge catch that bolstered his numbers but had a tough time finding room out of the backfield. 200 combined yards = Stud however!

Rashard Mendenhall – Pittsburgh Steelers – 22 rushes, 120 yards, two catches, 15 yards. Mendenhall is a Stud because of one play. A 50 yard touchdown in overtime was the only real highlight of the game – making him a Stud.

WRs

Austin Collie – Indianapolis Colts – 10 catches, 131 yards, one touchdown. Anthony Gonzalez doesn’t seem to be a distant memory with Collie in the mix. Collie was the trusted possession receiver that Manning needed in Week 1.

Hakeem Nicks – NY Giants – four catches, 75 yards, three touchdowns. Insane game for Nicks who put himself on the Stud map.

Ochocinco – 12 catches, 159 yards, one touchdown. Garbage time grabs but huge nonetheless.

Honourable Mention: Roddy White – 13 catches, 111 yards (23 targets!!!), Wes Welker – 8 catches, 64 yards, 2 touchdowns (welcome back), Steve Breaston – 7 catches, 132 yards, Miles Austin – 10 catches, 146 yards, one touchdown.

Duds of the Week:

Matt Schaub – Houston Texans – 9 of 17, 107 yards, one touchdown, one interception. Unfortunately Schaub didn’t have to throw but come on!

Mike Sims-Walker – Jacksonville Jaguars – Shut out!! Bubkiss, zero, zilch!!

Other Duds:

QBs

Brett Favre – Minnesota Vikings – 15/27, 171 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception. Disappointing game all around but Favre looked old, slow and out of sync.

Drew Brees – New Orleans Saints – 27/36, 237 yards and a touchdown. Not terrible but for those depending on Brees, this was a Dud performance.

Trent Edwards – Buffalo Bills – 18/34, 139 yards and one touchdown. He looked terrible and could make this list a few times this season.

RBs

Buffalo RBs – Spiller, Jackson and Lynch combined for 17 carries for 50 yards. All of the optimism is going out the window. CJ Spiller rushed seven times for a whopping six yards.

Michael Turner – Atlanta Falcons – 19 carries, 42 yards. Atlanta’s O-line got dominated by Pittsburgh. Still, the Falcons and Turner’s owners need more.

DeAngelo Williams – Carolina Panthers – 16 carries, 62 yards. Jonathan Stewart was a virtual non-factor, leaving Williams to shoulder the load. He didn’t deliver in the least!!

WRs

Andre Johnson – Houston Texans – 3 catches, 33 yards. Johnson will bounce back. I didn’t expect to see him on the Dud list! Simply, they didn’t need him in Week 1.

DeSean Jackson – Philadelphia Eagles – Kolb looked awful and Vick didn’t look his way. Jackson will bounce back like AJ – Week 1 wasn’t his week!

Michael Crabtree – San Francisco 49ers – 2 catches, 12 yards. He didn’t play in the preseason and it showed.
