The No. 12 California Golden Bears and the No. 5 UNLV Rebels are set to face off Thursday night in their first matchup of the NCAA Tournament. Will this be a classic case of a 12 seed taking down a 5 in the second round?

Oregon was hoping for a seed higher than 12, while the Cowboys were hoping for an opponent more resembling a lower seed. Oregon’s placement is unfortunate for both teams, but it will create for one of the more exciting Round 2 matchups in the tournament.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs earned the No. 1 seed in the West region, and they’re set to take on the No. 16 Southern University Jaguars. Everybody is waiting for the day when a 16 seed finally takes down a No. 1, but you’re not likely to see that happen in this particular matchup.
All of the advanced metrics say that this Pittsburgh team is really good. They aren’t horrible but I just don’t see it. What I do see is a team that is better than average in the deepest conference in America. They have a few nice wins but this is probably one of the least impressive Pitt teams of the past decade.
While the Madness technically gets started Tuesday night now with the Opening Round (Play-In) games, the true start of the tournament is Thursday afternoon. The first game everyone will tune in to is Valparaiso and Michigan State in the Midwest Region.
They are not as good as the football team but the basketball Broncos are better than you think. They were a very good 12-2 in the nonconference part of their schedule including an impressive win at Creighton that wasn’t even close.

Basketball in the West often gets a bad wrap. They aren’t all in this region but teams from the PAC 12, MWC, WCC and pretty well represented. Heck one of them even got a #1 seed. For me this is the lightest bracket of them all and not because Gonzaga is at the top.
