NFL Matchups – Week 9

Do not look now but last year’s Super Bowl teams are starting to look like their former selves. New Orleans moved its record to 5-3 with a convincing 20-10 win over Pittsburgh and Indianapolis is now 5-2 after manhandling Houston 30-17 on Monday night. New England has the best record in the league at 6-1 after knocking off Minnesota 28-18 and Buffalo remains winless at 0-7 after losing to Kansas City 13-10 in the closing seconds of overtime.

The following is a brief look at each matchup in Week 9 along with the current pointspread as supplied by Sports Interaction.

Sunday, Nov. 07

1:00 P.M.  Tampa Bay at Atlanta (-8)
Over/Under: 44 ½

Tampa Bay’s 38 points scored against Arizona in Sunday’s three-point win is the most scored since Week 9 of last year when the Bucs beat Green Bay 38-28. Atlanta is ranked 10th in the league in both average points scored (24.1) and average points allowed (19.0).

Miami at Baltimore (-5 ½)
Over/Under: 40 ½

Miami’s last three games have been decided by a total of 12 points with two wins and a loss. Baltimore is 7-1 in its last eight games following a bye week, outscoring its opponents by an average of 8.25 points per game. In the last nine years the only team to beat the Ravens after a bye were the Steelers.

Chicago (-2 ½) at Buffalo
Over/Under: 41

Chicago comes off its bye week with its offense averaging 18 points per game which is ranked 27th and its defense giving up an average of 16.3 points per game which is ranked third. Buffalo is the only team in the NFL without a win but has lost its last three games by a combined 16 points.

New Orleans (-7) at Carolina
Over/Under: 42 ½

After winning its first two games of the season, New Orleans has followed up every other win with a loss the following week for an overall record of 5-3. Carolina QB Matt Moore’s three interceptions in Sunday’s 20-10 loss to St. Louis give him twice as many picks (10) as TD throws (5) for the season.

New England (-5 ½) at Cleveland
Over/Under: 44

New England’s win over Minnesota leaves the Patriots all alone at the top of the AFC at 6-1 after both the Jets and the Steelers lost on Sunday. Cleveland Head Coach Eric Mangini is up to his old tricks concerning his quarterback situation as he has yet to pick a starter for this game.

San Diego (-1)at Houston
Over/Under: 50

San Diego may have saved its season with a 33-25 win over Tennessee this past Sunday, but the 3-5 Chargers are still 2 ½ games in back of the surging Chiefs in the AFC West. Houston is going to have to find a way to stop opposing teams on defense to any chance of making the postseason. The Texans are ranked last in total average yards allowed and 29th in points allowed.

N.Y. Jets (-4) at Detroit
Over/Under: 42 ½

New York’s LaDainian Tomlinson has joined  the late Walter Peyton as the only two running backs in the history of the NFL with over 13,000 yards rushing and 4000 yards receiving. Detroit QB Matthew Stafford completed 26-of-45 attempts for 212 yards and four TD’s in his first game back since injuring his shoulder on opening day.

Arizona at Minnesota (-8)
Over/Under: 41

Arizona QB Max Hall and Derek Anderson combined to throw four interceptions with two being returned for touchdowns in its 38-35 loss to Tampa Bay. Randy Moss’s reunion with his old team was short lived after Minnesota decided to waive the wide receiver after he was reportedly critical of some of the members of the coaching staff in the Vikings loss to New England; Moss’s old team. 4:05 P.M. N.Y. Giants (-5 ½) at Seattle
Over/Under: 41 ½

New York comes off its bye week with the second ranked defense in the league in average yards allowed and the third ranked offense in average yards per game. Seattle comes off a 33-3 pasting at the hands of Oakland with the 26th ranked defense in the league and the 30th ranked offense.

Kansas City at Oakland (-3)
Over/Under: 40 ½

The first-place 5-2 Kansas City Chiefs have not finished higher than third in the AFC West since 2005. The second-place 4-4 Oakland Raiders have not finished higher that third in the West since 2002. They have split this series the last three seasons with the home team losing straight-up every single time.

Indianapolis at Philadelphia (-3)
Over/Under: 46 ½

With TE Dallas Clarke and WR Austin Collie out of the lineup, TE Jacob Tamme and WR Pierre Garcon combined for 13 receptions for 142 yards in Indianapolis’s 30-17 win over Houston on Monday night. Philadelphia has not lost a game after a bye week since 1998, a year before Andy Reid took over as head coach of the team. The Eagles will also have Michael Vick back as their starting quarterback for this game

8:20 P.M. Dallas at Green Bay (-8)
Over/Under: 44 ½

Dallas owner Jerry Jones has assured Head Coach Wade Phillips that he has no plans to fire him during the regular season but it is now a foregone conclusion he will be let go once the season ends. Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers completed just 44.1 percent of his passes for 170 yards in the Packers 9-0 win over the Jets on Sunday.

Monday, Nov. 08

8:30 P.M. Pittsburgh (-4 ½) at Cincinnati
Over/Under: 41 ½

Pittsburgh was without both its starting defensive ends in Sunday night’s 20-10 loss to the Saints. Aaron Smith is out indefinitely with a torn triceps and Brett Keisel remains day-to-day with a sore hamstring. After a 2-1 start, Cincinnati has now lost four straight games to join Cleveland in the AFC North basement at 2-5.

Bye Week: Denver, Jacksonville, St. Louis, San Francisco, Tennessee, Washington
