2009 NBA Conference Finals Preview and Predictions

The final four teams in this year’s NBA playoffs have been set, as the Conference finals are set to tip off this Tuesday. The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Denver Nuggets had already closed out their second round series as the Cav’s took out Atlanta in 4 games and the Nuggets disposed of Dallas in 5. The other two series came down to a “winner take all” game 7, with Orlando shocking Boston at home and Los Angeles cruising past Houston in a rout.

Here is a preview of the Conference Finals as well as predictions of which teams will ultimately face each other for the 2009 NBA World Title.

Eastern Conference

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Orlando Magic

At first glance you would think that Cleveland should win this series going away. So far, they have won eight straight playoff games by double digits. They are healthy and well rested, and have proved to be almost unbeatable at home this season. LeBron James is playing at a very high level and the rest of the team has come together with the single purpose of bringing a championship home to Cleveland. Orlando has the tall task of trying to overcome all these obstacles in order to keep their title dreams alive.

They have the talent with Dwight Howard underneath and Hedo Turkoglu’s outside shooting to keep every game close and a “do or die” attitude that will keep them battling to the end. Overall, this will be a tough test for Cleveland as Orlando is a much better team than their opponents in the first two rounds, Detroit or Atlanta. The Magic will break the Cav’s playoff winning streak, but it will not be enough as they lose this series in 6 games.

Western Conference

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets

This series has all the makings of an instant classic. Denver has progressively looked better, first beating New Orleans in 5 games and then taking out Dallas in 5 games. The Lakers on the other hand suddenly appear beatable. While they took care of the Jazz in 5 games, they let Houston push them to 7 games in a series they should have won going away. The key will be can the Lakers play with a high level of intensity for another seven game series. Denver’s all around talent matches up extremely well and they have the ability to beat LA in this series, the question is will they? The Lakers seem to have a 6th gear that they can still shift into when things get tight. This will be a great series that will go the distance with LA coming out on top in another 7th game final.

NBA Championship Predictions:

From the start of these playoffs, I had Cleveland and Los Angeles headed for the finals. While the competition in this next round will be fierce, they are still the two best teams left and seemed destined to battle it out in the finals for the Title.

As these series progress it is looking more like Orlando, not Cleveland is headed to the finals. I really thought LeBron would get a little more help from his team as it is obvious that against a very good team like the Magic, he can’t do it all by himself.
