Stanford exceeding expectations:

No one expected Stanford to be in the hunt for a Pac 10 title in mid-November but that’s exactly where the Cardinal find themselves after pounding USC this past Saturday. Stanford ran all over Southern Cal, amassing over 325 yards rushing on 50 carries. This Stanford ground game is absolutely electric as they rank 10th in the country in rushing as they are averaging more than 222 yards a game on the ground. Stanford was able to control the clock and keep USC’s athletes off the field as they had the ball for more than 36 minutes.

When the defense was called upon, they came up big by forcing a fumble and pressured Matt Barkley into throwing three interceptions. Stanford now has two signature wins over Oregon and USC. They are currently a half game behind Oregon for first place in the Pac 10 but if Oregon loses another game and Stanford wins outright, they will be on their way to the Rose Bowl.

Ohio State wins 5th straight Big 10 Title:

Jim Tressel just keeps on winning in Columbus. His Buckeyes were able to capture at least a share of the Big 10 title with a chance to take it outright with another win over Michigan this week. Ohio State beat Iowa in an overtime thriller 27-24. It looked as if the Buckeyes had the game sealed when running back Brandon Sane ran for a 50 yard touchdown to put Ohio State ahead 24-10. But that wasn’t the case as Iowa returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown which put them right back in the game. The Hawkeyes eventually tied the game with 2:45 to go in regulation. In overtime, the stingy Ohio State defense sacked James Vandenberg and took Iowa out of field goal range. They were forced to go for it on 4th and a mile and Vandenberg threw an interception. Ohio State then took their chance on offense and kicked a field goal to clinch the victory and a berth in the Rose Bowl. It wasn’t pretty but the Buckeyes relied on sturdy defense and a sound rushing attack to win the Big 10.

TCU and Boise continue to pound conference opponents:

TCU and Boise State are two teams that experts like to call BCS Busters, meaning they are non-BCS teams who could make it to a BCS Bowl game. It’s unfortunate that we most likely won’t find out just how good these two teams are in a national title game as they continue to pound away on their conference foes. TCU blasted last year’s BCS Buster, Utah 48-20 as 20 point home favorites. The Horned Frogs are now 10-0 SU and 7-3 ATS. They are winning by an average margin of 26 points and boast one of the top defenses in the country. TCU also ranks 4th in both yards per game and points per game on offense. Boise State meanwhile put on an offensive display of their own, beating Idaho 63-25 and covering the lofty 31 point spread. The Broncos rank even higher than TCU in points per game as they are the number one scoring offense in the country, averaging 43.6 points per game. Much like TCU, Boise State is also 10-0 SU and 7-3 ATS, pounding opponents by an average margin of 27 points per game.
