Denny Hamlin might have punched his ticket to this year’s Chase with a victory at Martinsville his last time out. Brad Keselowski stayed hot by finishing second in that race after winning at Fontana and Joey Logano ended-up third.
Turning to this Saturday night’s race, the following are my top picks for favorite, contender and longshot based on current betting odds as provided by Sportsbook.ag.
Jimmie Johnson quickly posted his first victory this season by taking the checkered flag at Atlanta in the second Sprint Cup point race of the year, but since then it has been a bumpy ride for the No. 48 car.

This team only has one top-10 finish in its last four races, but it comes into this week’s race as a +600 second-favorite to win on Saturday night. I think there is some solid value in those betting odds considering how Johnson has dominated the series at Texas in recent years.
He finished a disappointing 25th in last year’s race, but looking back at his last five Sprint Cup races here, he has gone on to win three of them.
Any time I can get longer odds on Matt Kenseth I will usually put him in the mix despite the fact that the No. 20 car has not won a Sprint Cup race since the 2013 season.

This week he has been opened at +1000 betting odds to end that drought and believe he has a great chance to get it done.
Kenseth is coming off a solid run at Martinsville in which he finished fourth and he really adds value to these odds given his past performance at this week’s track.
Over the course of his career he has an average finishing position of 8.9 and he has finished in the top five in 10 of his last 16 Sprint Cup races at Texas. That run includes a victory in this race in 2011.
There was some concern for Kyle Larson when he fainted the day before the race at Martinsville, but has been cleared to go for Saturday night.
This will be just his fourth career run at Texas Motor Speedway in a Sprint Cup race, but I am going with the young gun as my top valued contender at +2000 odds.
He comes into this event in solid form with an eighth-place finish at Las Vegas and a 10th-place finish at Phoenix, but what sold me on this pick was Larson’s fifth place and seventh place finish in his two races last season at Texas.

This week, the circuit heads to the very fast 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway, where both Stewart and Edwards are previous winners. This track has been friendly to Roush-Fenway drivers through the years, with Matt Kenseth the most recent winner here in April. The race will be led to green by three Roush teammates: Greg Biffle (pole), David Ragan, and Matt Kenseth.
Carl Edwards (7/1): In 22 races overall at Texas Motor Speedway, Edwards has made 13 starts and has three wins, making him the winningest active driver here. He swept this track in 2008 and also won the November race in 2005. Edwards finished 3rd here in April after starting 2nd. He starts 7th on Sunday.
Kurt Busch (16/1): Kurt will start 14th on Sunday and is a previous Texas winner, having won the November race in 2009. Busch finished 10th here in the spring race and rolls off 14th on Sunday. Busch is currently 8th in championship point standings. [ad-8757089]
Greg Biffle (22/1): Biffle won at Texas in the spring of 2005 and has posted six straight top-10 finishes heading into Sunday’s race, where he will be starting on the pole. Biffle ran 4th here in the spring and is one of the non-Chase contenders who doesn’t have much to lose by going for a win before the season is out.
Notes: Matt Kenseth has the best average finish at Texas Motor Speedway, followed by Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson.
Kenseth won the spring race here after leading 169 laps. Edwards and Kenseth both go off at 7/1 odds, but Edwards may have the greater motivation as he tries to put gain some distance on Tony Stewart in the Chase standings.
Stewart’s previous Texas win came in this race in 2006.
Kyle Busch, who was tied with Jimmie Johnson as a favorite with 5/1 odds, was parked by NASCAR Saturday morning following a vicious hit on Ron Hornaday in Friday night’s truck race; Busch will not race in either the Nationwide or Cup race this weekend.
Preview: It’s a whole new race at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend, the first night race of the 2011 season and the first time a Cup race has been run here entirely under the lights, though previous races started in the late afternoon and finished after sunset.
Preview: Three races left, three drivers still in the running for the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup title. Heading into Texas this weekend, four-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson still has the points lead, but only by a slim 14-point margin over Denny Hamlin and 38 points over Kevin Harvick.
Preview: It’s been a good week for Tony Stewart so far. Last Saturday, his teammate and driver Ryan Newman won in Phoenix, Newman’s first win since the 2008 Daytona 500. Today, Stewart scored the pole for the Texas Cup race, his first pole since 2005.
