NBA news: Carmelo Anthony trade almost complete? Varejao out for season; More Donald Sterling accusations

Carmelo Anthony trade almost complete...

Is the Carmelo Anthony saga about to end? The Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets and Detroit Pistons are closing in on a three-team trade that would send Melo to New Jersey. The deal would likely also send former Pistons teammates Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton to the Nets along with Anthony Carer and Shelden Williams.

Denver would receive two first-rounders from the Nets plus Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Anthony Morrow, Ben Uzoh, Stephen Graham and Quinton Ross (so, yes, and entire team’s worth of guys). Detroit would land Troy Murphy and Johan Petro. Pretty epic stuff. Don’t be surprised if this deal is done within a day or two.

Cleveland Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao got the lucky way out over the weekend: a season-ending injury. He tore an ankle tendon during practice on Thursday and an MRI Sunday revealed the injury. Varejao was enjoying a solid season with the 8-28 Cavs, averaging 9.1 points and 9.7 rebounds.

How is Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling getting away with so much? He’s already been called out for heckling his own players – especially Baron Davis – during games. Now, former general manager and NBA legend Elgin Baylor is making new accusations. Not only does he claim Sterling discriminated against him because he was black and underpaid him, he says Sterling would regularly bring women into the Clippers’ locker room after games.

Allegedly, Elton Brand, Sam Cassell and Corey Maggette all said that Sterling would bring the women in while the players were showering and say things like “Look at those beautiful black bodies.” Um, David Stern? Care to step in here? I think Mr. Sterling needs a bit of discipline, no?

NHL news: Alexander Frolov out for season; Kostopoulos, Eager suspended for hits; Kings extend Jack Johnson

Disappointing New York Rangers forward Alexander Frolov, who had just seven goals for the Blueshirts this year, was the subject of trade rumors last week. But he isn’t going anywhere. He tore his ACL against the Blues on Saturday night and will miss the rest of the season.

The NHL dished out a couple of suspensions for dirty play over the weekend. Atlanta Thrashers forward Ben Eager got a four-game pan for sucker-punching Toronto’s Colby Armstrong and scratching his cornea. Calgary’s Tom Kostopoulos has been suspended six games for his head shot on Detroit defender Brad Stuart.

The Los Angeles Kings already have a blue chipper on defense in Drew Doughty; now, they’ve locked up another one long-term. L.A. signed big Jack Johnson to a seven-year, $30.5-million extension during the weekend. Johnson, who turns 24 this week, has broken out for 31 points in his first 41 games this season.

NFL news: Ed Reed’s brother flees police, goes missing; Nnamdi Asomugha’s contract voids

The Ravens dominated the Kansas City Chiefs in yesterday’s NFL Wild-Card playoff game but safety Ed Reed was distracted. His brother had gone missing. Brian Reed fled police after being caught driving a vehicle that was believed stolen. He jumped into the Mississippi river and police later found his jacket and shoes abandoned. Given the 42-degree temperature in the water, authorities don’t think Reed could’ve lasted long without succumbing to hypothermia. They’ve called off the search for him.

Some people balked in February 2009 when Nnamdi Asomugha signed the richest contract ever for an NFL defensive back at $45 million over three years. But the deal is no more. Asomugha failed to meet incentives this year and his contract his now void. He failed to participate in more plays than he did last season or improve his interception, fumble recovery or sack totals and needed to do so to keep the contract intact.
