Mexico have only won four of their previous 25 meetings with Argentina, drawing 10 and losing 11 including a 2-1 loss in the second round of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, courtesy of a Maxi Rodriguez’s goal in extra-time.

Now David will square of against Goliath in an exact rematch in South Africa on Sunday, with Maradona’s men looking to repeat their dominance after concluding a perfect group qualification campaign that began with an opening 1-0 win over Nigeria before thumping South Korea 4-1 and then finishing off with a commanding 2-0 victory over Greece.

But it won’t be easy against a Mexican side that have shown some of their own prowess, finishing second in Group A qualification — if only on a goal difference. After being held to an opening day 1-1 draw with hosts South Africa, Javier Aguirre’s side then registered a decisive 2-0 result against self-imploding France, and finished with a 1-0 reverse against top of the group Uruguay in their final game.

While world footballer of the year Lionel Messi has failed to find the net, Argentina’s strength in depth has been shown by defenders Gabriel Heinze and Martin Demichelis notching, while Gonzalo Higuain hit a hat trick against the Koreans. After resting several key players against Greece in their last match, Maradona will surely be making some changes to the starting XI.

Skipper Javier Mascherano and strikers Carlos Tevez and Higuain are set to return to the side, as are defenders Gabriel Heinze, Walter Samuel and Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez, who was suspended his last time out.

Meanwhile, Mexico are hoping to have Arsenal striker Carlos Vela fit for the clash as well as defender Efrain Juarez after missing the Uruguay defeat following a pair of bookings. Juarez, a pacy right back who can also operate as a defensive midfielder, will be key in helping to anchor Mexico’s backline. A critical ingredient if El Tri wants to shut down Messi and Co.

It will be important that Mexico keep the Argentinean strike force in check, not giving up a quick goal that could potentially take them out of the game early on. Something El Tri have not done well, conceding inside the first ten minutes in three of their last four Round of 16 matches at the World Cup.

Argentina is a finely tuned machine that plays focused football and controls the pitch with pinpoint precision. In their game against Greece, they maintained possession more 80 percent of the time and completed more passes than any other team in a World Cup game since 1966.

On the other hand, Mexico desperatly wants to make history this year by reaching the quarterfinals outside of their own country for the first time, having achieved the feat on home soil in both 1970 and 1986. Stranger things have happened in this year’s tounrey, and if you are looking to wager for a hefty return, than Mexico is your bet in this one.
