The English Premier League returns this weekend after a week off for Euro2012 Qualifiers and international friendlies beginning with one of the year’s biggest match’s of  the season, as the league’s wealthiest take on the 2009 reigning champions and current leaders, Chelsea, who are hoping to avoid a third successive defeat against the Citizens.

The Blues enter the match having won all five of their games so far, while Manchester City has endured a mixed start to a campaign that promised so much.

However, City has improved in a number of areas and even though Chelsea is in top form, the same could be said about the past three meetings between these two sides that resulted in three victories for the Citizens.

The difference between the two is Chelsea’s striking power versus City’s dominating midfield play. Both play well defensively and have solid net minders between the sticks, so this likely to be a low scoring affair.

Hard to believe with the likes of Chelsea striker Didier Drogba patrolling the pitch. The 2009 Golden Boot recipient is enough to get any defender sweating for sure. If City wants to win, they will have to find a way to shut the six-goal scorer down. However, they cannot afford to focus too much attention on Drogba, as the Pensioners have other ways to attack the oppositions net with fiery.

Midfielder Florent Malouda, the clubs leading scorer and second overall, as well as strikers Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka are also all capable of contributing to the Chelsea assault.

Likewise, City has its prized punter in Argentinean striker Carlos Tevez, who is a nightmare for most defenders to play against. He will likely be shadowed by veteran defender John Terry whose job it will be to contain Tevez with the help of Jose Bosingwa and Alex.

Of course last season Terry was the losing captain in both matches, but he is not likely to concede easily again.

City has only conceded a penalty and a mishandled Joe Hart gaffe goal this season, as the defense has been magnificent. A big part of that defensive effort has come from midfielder Vincent Kompany who will be tasked with keeping Chelsea’s Drogba off the score sheet since defenders Wayne Bridge, Jerome Boateng and Kolarov will remain sidelined for Saturday’s match.

The main strength for City will be their ability to control the ball at midfield. The Citizens definitely have the edge here and are likely to snuff out the Chelsea attack before it gets into the final third.

The loss to injury on defense has forced City to holdback its attacking style somewhat but that doesn’t mean they will not be attacking the ball.

With City likely to dominate the midfield and the aging legs of Terry struggling to contain Tevez it is probable that the Chelsea could get caught chasing. However, it’s more likely that Drogba finds a way to slip behind a battered Citizens’ backline resulting in the winning strike.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Chelsea win 1 – 0.
