Germany has once again reached the World Cup, and like years past has their hopes set on lifting its fourth piece of hardware since the ‘Miracle of Berne’ – its first-ever world title in 1954. They followed winning again on home soil in 1974 and once more in Italy in 1990.

Most recently the Germans finished a disappointing third after losing to the eventual champions Italy in the semifinals in the 2006 World Cup.

They have reached a record seven World Cup final matches and will look to make it eight in South Africa this summer.

Head coach Joachim Low has given himself every opportunity for success by grooming an efficient and explosive side that has the tactical skills to bring Die Mannschaft back to the finals.

After serving time as former German Boss Jurgen Klinsmann’s assistant at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the 49-year-old stepped up to the helm in July of that same year.

The SC Freiburg all-time leading scorer has already led his club to winning EURO 2008, and now sets his sights on South Africa 2010.

The Germans play solid all around soccer and are led by longtime captain Michael Ballack of Chelsea fame. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

The 33-year-old national captain will make his 97th appearance for Die Mannschaft and a major trophy would elevate him to membership of an elite group of World Cup-winning German captains, like legendary trio Fritz Walter, Franz Beckenbauer and Lothar Matthaus. He will be aided by superstar Miroslav Klose.

The Bayern Munich striker is third on the All-time German scoring chart with 48 goals in 93 internationals. The squad is rounded out with fellow Bayern teammates Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm, and Lukas Podolski, all of who has what it takes to acquire a fourth World Cup title for the Germans.

The Germans demonstrated their goal scoring skills and resolve as they marched to first place in European qualifying Group 4 for the FIFA World Cup 2010.

After making quick work of Wales, Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein, the Germans finally dropped their only points in both home and away sets with Finland. Klose’s hat trick tied the first meeting three times in a 3-3 draw in Helsinki, and Podolski’s last-minute equalizer lifted the side to a 1-1 draw in Hamburg.

The squad then moved on to square off against their bitter rival Russia. Germany attacked the Russians in Dortmund coming away with a 2-1 victory and then on the penultimate match day, defeated the Reds in Moscow for their first-ever home defeat in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

Look for Germany to better their third place finish in 2010, as one of two sides to make it out of the group D stage.
