Surviving a slow start to the 2009-10 season, the Blackburn Rovers were able to find consistent form for the remainder of the year concluding their campaign with wins over both Arsenal and Aston Villa and clinching a 10th place spot on the English Premier table.

The Rovers were also victorious over reigning champs Chelsea, and gained points against Manchester United and Liverpool. The were eliminated in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, but made it as far as the League Cup semifinals.

All in all it was a good season for manager Sam Allardyce and his boys from Ewood Park.

Much of Blackburn’s success last season did not come from the 42 goals they netted; rather it was from the improved play from veteran goalkeeper Paul Robinson. In spite of some disappointing stretches last season, he was the hero for the Rovers in a League Cup upset against Chelsea, and made his 75th appearance for Blackburn in a 0–0 draw against Manchester United in April, keeping a clean sheet.

Robinson ended the season with 13 clean sheets in the Premier League, the best clean sheet total out of all the English keepers. After recently announcing his international retirement, the focus for the 30-year old Englishman will be on just getting Blackburn to do even better this year. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

There was virtually no transfer activity at Ewood Park as Allardyce and the Rovers feel that they have produced a squad that does not need many new players, as they are confident the current squad has the skills to take on anyone at this level.

Allardyce will rely on proven top-flight performers like leading scorer David Dunn, Ryan Nelsen, and Morten Gamst Pedersen, while young English defender Phil Jones is a great prospect for the future.

Dunn, an attacking midfielder scored his 50th goal for his hometown club against Arsenal in 2009, and finished the season with nine goals and two assists. Nelson, a center back that also captains the New Zealand national team, made a total of 33 appearances, and scored four goals for Blackburn in 2009-10.

Both players will be expected to perform even better in this year’s campaign.

The Rovers did pick up young striker Mame Biram Diouf on loan from Manchester United, and the Senegal national team. Diouf made an immediate impact for Blackburn, scoring within 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute in a 1–1 friendly draw against Hearts early this month.

Blackburn 2010 Prediction: The Rovers are a very strong side that has great chemistry. Providing that they once again get off to a strong start by winning some early Premier League fixtures, they could find themselves in European competition next season.

Blackburn should be able to better their mid-table finish by placing in the top 8.
