Algeria stunned the futbol community when they knocked out African champions Egypt in qualifying to make its first appearance in the FIFA final in 24 years.

The Desert Foxes have made it to the finals just two previous times with their greatest moment coming in Spain 1982 when they beat West Germany 2-1, but were kept from advancing to next round. Eight years later, Algeria achieved continental glory when they won their only African Cup of Nations title in 1990.

They will have to work hard to turn in another historic performance in South Africa.

The Desert Foxes of Algeria are under the guidance of coach Rabah ‘Cheik’ Saadane who will face the daunting task of getting his side out of the group stage against the likes of England and the United States.

Following an unpretentious playing career in his homeland and brief stint with France, Saadane would be part of Algeria’s coaching staff in the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain.

He has taken over the reins of the national side on four separate occasions, with his current stint beginning in 2007. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

He will have at his disposal French born midfielder Karim Zian.

The 27-year old will be the center of Les Fennecs attack. The midfield maestro has been assigned to Wolfsburg but has not played much for the defending Bundesliga champions so he should have fresh legs.

The squad is led by captain Yazid Mansouri, who will be heavily relied upon as the central playmaker, feeding the ball to Ziani as well as Mourad Meghni and striker Karim Matmour who has steadily been coming into his own.

Antar Yahia anchors the backline along with goalkeeper Lounes Gaouaoui.

The Desert Foxes put on a show during their thrilling qualifying run that ended with an exciting playoff win over archrival Egypt in Sudan. Algeria finished wining all six of their home games in the second and third qualifying rounds but lost three of their away visits, while drawing twice and winning the other game.

They finished one point ahead of Gambia, Senegal and Liberia in their first qualifying group, before tying with Egypt in the second.

The Algerians are the most overlooked team in this group. Algeria is the most hardened and battle tested team in the group due to their tough qualifying campaign.

They will need every bit of that mental toughness to advance but it shouldn’t surprise anyone if they do especially with an unproven Slovenia and erratic USA in the group.
