Thursday night features a game that is essentially worst versus first as the lowest seeded Canadian team takes on the highest. Edmonton is stuck at the bottom of the Western Conference while the Habs could take over first in the East with a win tonight.

Oilers

Well on the bright side the Oilers aren’t in the midst of some astronomical losing streak at the moment and are actually .500 over their last 10 games.

On the downside, wins have still been hard to come by and they’ve let slip some games that they probably should have done better in.

The Oilers were downed 3-2 by the Islanders earlier this week in a game where they fired 36 shots on goal and surrendered only 28. Edmonton carried the play for the most part against the superior Islanders but just couldn’t find a way to get the goal they needed to get them a point or two.

Edmonton put in a very solid performance in their 2-1 win over the Devils the game before the loss to New York, giving up just 14 shots in a 2-1 win against a very lack luster Devils team.

The most concerning loss though was a 5-1 loss at the hands of the Maple Leafs on Saturday, a Leafs team that hadn’t won in 11 outings and were struggling to score. Edmonton outshot Toronto in that one by a count of 32-28 but were ripped apart on the scoreboard.

The bottom line with this team is that they’re doing a better job limiting shots to a point but they’re still giving up too many quality chances to teams with potent offenses and the Oilers aren’t filling the net enough on the other end to counter their defensive deficiencies.

Canadiens

Montreal is cruising right now, riding a three game winning streak and an 8-2-0 record over their last 10. Carey Price has been his usual stabilizing self, stealing games when called upon and the offense has been sufficient enough to get the wins.

The line of David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty and Dale Weise has been red hot of late, essentially carrying the offense all by themselves.
Desharnais has eight points in his last five games, while Weise and Pacioretty have five each. Any time your top line is contributing a combined 18 points over five games you’re going to have success.

This can be a slight cause for concern for the Habs as the secondary scoring has dried up quite a bit of late, and the likes of Tomas Plekanec, Brendan Gallagher and Alex Galchenyuk have combined for just nine points over the last five games.

Dustin Tokarski will get the call in net tonight for Montreal so Edmonton may catch a slight break in that Tokarski wasn’t very sharp his last time out in a loss to the Coyotes.

Oilers vs. Canadiens 4* Free Pick

Edmonton has been running on a consistent pace of win one lose one for a little while now and have managed to play .500 hockey for their last 10. Tonight I just think the competition level is too high with the Habs who are playing strong of late.

The Canadiens were a little weak on offense against a Flyers team with a backup netminder and will need to see some secondary scoring wake up soon if they want to keep their push going for first in the East.

I just think Edmonton is a bit too over matched in this one and the Canadiens will beat them in all ends of the ice.

Take Montreal to win.
