If the Divisional rival wasn’t enough to get the players going, Thursday night marks the return of Ryan Kesler whose relationship with the fans could make for a chilly welcome for the former Canuck.

The Ducks haven’t been all that great lately. They enter Thursday night’s clash on a three game losing streak and having gone just 1-1-5 in their last seven games.

They are coming off a 4-3 shootout loss to the Flames Tuesday night in a game that they probably should have won. The good news for the Ducks is that they traditionally do very well in Vancouver – they have won four straight there.

Ryan Kesler, the grumpy second line forward spent 11 years with the Canucks recording six 20-goal seasons and netting 182 goals with 393 points during his time there should be fired up in this one. This season he has been OK playing on Anaheim’s top line – six goals and nine assists.

He seems to be fitting in just fine with a Ducks offense that has averaged just 2.60 goals per game this year.

Injuries, viral infections have played a part in Anaheim’s recent struggles – Corey Perry is back in the lineup after an ugly bout of the mumps and Ryan Getzlaf has not recorded a point in his last two games.

If Perry and Getzlaf are struggling – the whole team is sunk as shown over the last couple of weeks. It’s a good thing for Sami Vatanen who has six points in his last four games, Emerson Etem who has three points in three games and Hampus Lindholm who has four points in four.

That said it those guys continue to lead the way Anaheim is in trouble.

Anaheim’s defense has been good this year and will need to be against a Canucks offense that seems to be catching fire. On the season the Ducks are surrendering 2.35 goals against and their goaltenders have both had a .920 save percentage this year.

Probable starter Frederik Andersen has slumped lately however – he is 0-1-1- in his last two games with a 3.85 GAA and ugly .794 save percentage.

The Vancouver Canucks looked pretty sharp offensively last night in a 5-4 win in Edmonton. Vancouver’s top line of Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin and Radim Vrbata combined for seven points – Vrbata scored two for an offense that is averaging a very good 2.95 goals per game this year.

Nick Bonino who was traded for Ryan Kesler has been terrific – seven goals and eight assists so far and Vancouver’s secondary scoring has been a real surprise for a team that has 10 players with three or more goals on the year.

Vancouver seems to be back to its free-wheeling style which is good news for its fans and bad news for the rest of the Western Conference.

Ryan Miller, despite leading the NHL in goals has hit the skids a tad lately – he has allowed 12 goals in his last three games including four goals on 32 shots last night. He may get the night off in the second of back-to-back games.

Eddie Lack who won Vancouver’s only meeting with Anaheim this year may get the call between the pipes. He is just 1-4-1 against the Ducks but looked terrific 11 days ago in the win.

NHL Gambling Trends

• ANA are 1-7 in their last 8 vs. Pacific.
• Under is 12-3-1 in ANA last 16 overall.
• VAN are 8-2 in their last 10 vs. Pacific.
• VAN are 9-3 in their last 12 overall.
• Under is 5-2-1 in VAN last 8 games following a win.
• Over is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings in Vancouver.
• Over is 17-8-1 in the last 26 meetings.

Anaheim has won its last four visits to Vancouver, outscoring the Canucks 18-5 – 6-0-1 in its last seven games at the Canucks. But the Vancouver won the only meeting of the two teams this season – 2-1 in a shootout at Honda Center November 9.

The Ducks are a better team than they have shown the last couple of weeks – something tells me they snap out of their funk Thursday in a building they have looked very comfortable in.

The Canucks arrived back in town early this morning – unenviable to say the least.
