Week 5 NFL Lines: MNF Jets vs. Dolphins

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2009 Monday Night Football Week 5 NFL clash between the N.Y. Jets and the Miami Dolphins…

Monday Night Football Betting – Jets Defense To Smother Henne, Dolphins

The New York Jets had a loss last week and there was some concern on their part that it would open a window for the New England Patriots to take control in the division. But thanks to the Denver Broncos, the Jets maintain their one-game lead on the Patriots and can extend it tonight with a win over the Miami Dolphins.

For Miami, it was no secret that repeating last year’s success would be difficult because of a very difficult schedule. That task increased exponentially when starting quarterback Chad Pennington was lost for the season with a shoulder injury. Now quarterback of the future, Chad Henne, will make his second career start against the New York Jets and he should be in for a rough time. He had success against the Buffalo Bills last week but to put it plainly, the Jets are not the Bills.

Jets offense vs Dolphins defense

The Jets offense versus the Dolphins defense will be the story of the game – and the story of most Dolphins games the rest of the year.

Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez made a couple of key mistakes in New Orleans last week and that cost his team the game. The Jets may come out with a more conservative game plan but that won’t necessarily work against this above average Miami defense.

The Jets acquired big play receiver Braylon Edwards midweek and it’s unclear what type of role he’ll play in this game. One thing is for sure, though: the Dolphins will have to respect his ability to stretch the field.
With Edwards and Cotchery, the Jets should be able to loosen up the Dolphins defense at some point and get enough points on the board to win it.

Dolphins offense vs Jets defense

This is a really tough, bad matchup for the Dolphins. For now, their goal will be to make Henne a caretaker while having the running game lead the way but the Jets are one of the best defenses in the NFL. It’s hard to imagine that the Jets, facing a one-dimensional offense, will let the Dolphins beat them on the ground.

The Dolphins don’t have many – if any – playmakers in the passing game, which means Henne won’t get much help when he’s throwing the ball. At some point in the game, he’s going to have to make throws to win it and it just doesn’t look like a likely prospect.

Outlook & Pick
The Jets played the New Orleans Saints last week and after facing a lethal offense led by one of the best quarterbacks in the league (Drew Brees), slowing down a one-dimensional offense with a raw starter in Chad Henne should be much easier. After facing that dynamic offense, the Dolphins might look like a Sun Belt team.

The Jets offense will struggle in the first half as the charged Miami crowd encourages their defense but they’ll break through with a touchdown and a pair of field goals to eventually get the job done.

Pick: Jets -1

So far for week five , there has been 7 games that have gone over, 5 that have stayed under with 1 push, Washington at Carolina. This game should even this out a bit as this was one of my top picks for an Under.
