He started by trading disgruntled defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth to New England and veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb to Minnesota after neither player lived up to the huge expectations they both brought when first signed.
He was able to fill Haynesworth’s void through the draft and free agency, but he still has yet to decide who will replace McNabb.
Last year, Rex Grossman came in relief at quarterback for the final few games of the season, but he is currently in a heated battle with John Beck for the starting role.
This battle is expected to last through the rest of preseason before Shanahan announces who will line up under center on opening day against the Giants. Grossman has the most experience of the two, but neither player has shown they have what it takes to be an every game starter in this league.
Fortunately, the Redskins should be able to rely on a decent running game with Ryan Torain as the lead back with fourth-round pick Roy Helu and free-agent Tim Hightower in a supporting role.
Whoever gets the call at quarterback will have a number of targets to try and get the ball to with wide receiver Santana Moss and tight end Chris Cooley at the top of the list. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Washington added to the list by drafting Leonard Hankerson in the third round and adding veteran wide receiver’s Jabar Gaffney and Donte’ Stallworth as free agents.
The departure of Haynesworth was inevitable at the end of last season, so the Redskins used the draft to select defensive linemen Ryan Kerrigan in the first round and Jarvis Jenkins in the second.
Shanahan is counting on these two to make an immediate impact on a defense that finished last season ranked 31st overall and 26th against the run.
The Redskin faithful believe that this team will be able to compete for a division title in a very talented NFC East, but the reality is this season and possibly next have to be viewed as rebuilding years for a franchise that has posted just two winning seasons since 2000.
