A couple of early losses and a season-ending injury to quarterback Tony Romo completely derailed their chances to even compile a winning record. With Jason Garrett in place as the new head coach, after serving as the interim coach at the end of last season, and Romo back as the starter, the Cowboys are confident they can return to the form that led to 11 wins and a NFC East title in 2009.
Romo back under center automatically makes this offense better, but John Kitna actually did a pretty good job in relief last year. Dallas finished the season ranked seventh in total yards and scoring.
Gone are Roy Williams and Marion Barber, but this side of the ball is still loaded with talent with wide receiver Miles Austin and tight end Jason Whitten as the primary targets in the passing game.
They are coming off a year where they combined for 163 receptions for 2,043 yards. Another key contributor should be wide receiver Dez Bryant, who was having an incredible rookie year before breaking an ankle towards the end of the season. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
The running game will be anchored by Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, but keep an eye on third-round draft pick DeMarco Murray who should be able to add some outside speed to the lineup as well as become another threat catching the ball out of the backfield.
The Cowboys’ defense should have a much different attitude this season with the hiring of the fiery Rob Ryan as the new coordinator. He will have his work cut out for him with a squad that finished the 2010 season ranked 23rd in the NFL overall and 31st in points allowed.
The secondary became an immediate concern for this year with a groin injury to cornerback Terrence Newman that has kept him on the sidelines for the entire preseason. They did sign defensive back Abram Elam as a free agent just in case Newman’s injury lingers into the regular season.
Dallas appears to have everything back in place to make a run at returning to the top of the division.
The overall talent level remains high and the coaching changes should bring a much needed change in attitude.
This team will definitely improve upon last year’s six wins, but is still the third-best team in the East.
