The Jacksonville Jaguars will try and keep pace with Indianapolis atop the AFC South when they travel to the New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey for a Sunday afternoon game against the New York Giants. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast regionally on CBS.

Jacksonville’s season is at a crossroads and the outcome of this week’s game is pivotal in determining which direction the Jaguars will head. They are currently 6-4 (both straight-up and against the spread) and tied with the Colts for first place in the division, but have an offense that is ranked 20th in the league and a defense that is ranked 27th. NFL Betting

Last year at this time Jacksonville had the same record, but ended the season losing five of its last six games to finish 7-9. The Jags have already won a few games this season that they easily could have lost, especially their 31-24 win over Houston on a fluky tipped ball for a last-second score and improbable rally last week in their 24-20 win over Cleveland. Overall, QB David Garrard has played better this season, but you still have to question how far he can take this team, especially against some of the better competition they will face down the stretch.

New York is in almost the same dilemma as Jacksonville. The Giants are also 6-4 (5-5 ATS) and in second place in the NFC East after last Sunday night’s 27-17 loss to Philadelphia, which was their second loss in a row. Last season they raced out to a 5-0 start only to crash and burn down the stretch to finish 8-8.

The primary difference between these two teams is the fact that New York is much better equipped to keep things going in the right direction this season. Its offense, led by QB Eli Manning, is ranked third overall and seventh in scoring; averaging 25.3 points per game. The Giants do have some issues at wide receiver, after losing Hakeem Nicks for a few weeks with a leg injury, but their fifth ranked rushing offense brings a solid balance to their overall attack.

New York also boasts the second ranked defense in the league that is third against the pass and fourth against the run. This unit should be more than capable of shutting the Jaguars down, especially playing at home.

Trends:

Jacksonville is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games as an underdog and 2-5 ATS in its last seven games on the road. The total has gone ‘over’ in all five of the Jaguars last five road games.
New York is 4-9 ATS in its last 13 games as a favorite and 3-8 ATS in its last 11 games at home. The total has gone ‘over’ in seven of the Giants last nine home games and in four of their last five games overall.

The Giants have some issues on defense that have been exposed in their last two games, but remain the better overall team in this matchup. Take Tom Coughlin’s bunch to get back on track with a big win at home this week.

The Pick: New York -7 ½ and OVER
