NFC East Game Previews – Patriots vs Redskins

The New England Patriots continue their quest for another AFC East Division title this Sunday afternoon when they face-off against the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field.

Point spread: Patriots -9
Over/Under: 48

The kick-off for this inter-conference clash is slated for 1 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast CBS.

It was not as easy as it was supposed to be, but New England is well on its way to another division title after squeaking by Indianapolis last Sunday 31-24 as a prohibitive 20.5-point home favorite. It is now 9-3 straight-up on the year (7-5 against the spread) and two games ahead of the Jets in the AFC East. The total has gone ‘over’ in seven of its 12 games this season.

The formula for the Patriots this season has been fairly simple; outscore your opponents with an offense that is ranked third in the NFL in scoring with an average of 30.2 points a game. Tom Brady leads a passing attack that is averaging 316.6 yards a game. He has already thrown for 3,916 yards and 30 touchdowns with four games left to play.

Ever since a six-game losing streak derailed a smoke-and-mirrors 3-1 start, Washington is once again riding out the string of another lost season. Last week it fell to the Jets 34-19 as a three-point home underdog after imploding in the fourth quarter. It is now 4-8 SU on the year and 5-7 ATS. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its 12 games this year. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Redskins’ defense, which is ranked ninth in the league against the pass, might be able to slow the Patriots’ aerial assault down a bit, but it is highly doubtful that their offense, which is averaging 16.8 points a game will be able to keep this game close through the third quarter.

New England is 6-2 ATS in its last eight games as a road favorite and the total has gone ‘over’ in 11 of its last 15 games on the road.

Washington is 2-6 ATS in its last eight games as an underdog and 1-4 ATS in its last five home games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in 13 of its last 19 games overall.

After letting the Colts hang around last week, the Patriots have learned their lesson about putting games away. A win this Sunday keeps it in prime position for one of the two top spots in the AFC, so stick with New England to easily cover the nine points on the road.

The Pick: New England 34 vs. Washington 17
