Monday Night NFL Betting – 49ers Will Show Up On Monday Night

The New Orleans Saints dispatched of the Minnesota Vikings rather easily in the 2010 NFL regular season kickoff contest and now, after 10 to prepare, they head out West to face a San Francisco 49ers squad that was embarrassed in Seattle last week.

The 49ers are desperate but are they good enough?

How Can New Orleans Win?

The Saints can win because they’ll have the better offense on Monday. Beyond that, they are very rested and have had plenty of time to prepare.

The 49ers allowed Matt Hasselbeck to pick them apart. Drew Brees is a step up (just a little bit) and his slew of weapons that includes Marques Colston, Robert Meachem, Reggie Bush and Jeremy Shockey.

The Saints managed to protect Brees very well against the Vikings defensive line, which is better than what they’ll see this week. It’s hard to fathom them losing if Brees is upright making clean decisions.

There has been no evidence of a Super Bowl hangover as of yet, so the Saints are still the Saints until further notice. In other words, they are the best team in the NFC.

How Can San Francisco Win?

Run the ball and do it well.

The 49ers got off to a great start on the road in Seattle last week, moving the ball up and down the field and generating a number of scoring opportunities. The result was only a six-point lead, though, even though they were inside the Seattle six-yard line three times. They also held the ball for 12:46 of the first quarter.

San Fran just needs more of the same; this time, they have to execute better.

Not only does the running game have to perform better, so does wideout Michael Crabtree and quarterback Alex Smith. There was optimism in San Francisco this offseason because many people felt that their defense was elite and now that Smith and Crabtree were developing, the 49ers would have ample offense to support the defense. They have to prove that theory true on Monday night and turn their season around.

Outlook

It’s gut-check time for the 49ers. They won all four of their preseason games and entered the season with swagger. Unfortunately, that swagger was left at Qwest Field after the Seattle Seahawks embarrassed them 31-6 in Week 1.

49ers head coach Mike Singletary has laid into his team this week and you can be sure that they will come up with a better effort. The key here is that the 49ers defense plays much better at home than it does on the road. They’ll slow down the Saints just enough and control the ball on offense with Frank Gore to eke out a slim win.

Pick: 49ers +5.5
