San Francisco 49ers @ Seattle Seahawks

Sunday, September 12, 4:15 p.m. ET
Week 1 NFL gambling favorite: 49ers -2

With Kurt Warner retired, the NFC West is up for grabs – more so for the 49ers and Seahawks than for the Rams. We have a pretty good idea of where the 49ers stand this year. Their defense is steadily improving year to year under Mike Singletary’s tutelage and the offense could spike bigtime this year now that they’ve built a beastly offensive line.

Alex Smith doesn’t have to be that good for San Fran to win the division. He can dink and dunk and hit Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis in the endzone, with Frank Gore pounding the ball between the 20’s. When you make your Week 1 NFL picks, expect San Fran to put on a clinic at Seattle. The Seahawks have some nice new toys – especially in Golden Tate – but they’ll need time to adjust to Pete Carroll.

Pick: 49ers -2

Dallas Cowboys @ Washington Redskins

Sunday, September 12, 8:20 p.m. ET
Week 1 NFL gambling favorite: Cowboys -3.5

Here’s an example of sportsbooks putting too much stock into Mike Shanahan and Donovan McNabb’s reputations. It’s not that the Redskins are hopeless this season; they may surprise us with their new personnel. But they’re nowhere near Dallas’ caliber.

The Cowboys look like real Super Bowl contenders this year thanks to a vicious pass rush and a powerhouse offense that could be the NFL’s best. Washington excelled against the pass last year but, even if it can bottle up Tony Romo, Miles Austin, Jason Witten and Dez Bryant, still has to contend with Felix Jones and Marion Barber running the football. Take Dallas’ line and run with it in your NFL picks.

Pick: Cowboys -3.5

Baltimore Ravens @ New York Jets

Monday, September 13, 7:00 p.m. ET
Week 1 NFL gambling favorite: Jets -3

Monday Night Football starts off in style with what I think is an AFC Championship preview. The Ravens and Jets both looked like they were just a piece or two away from winning the conference last season. Over the offseason, they both went out and got what they needed.

The Jets already had the NFL’s top defense and they’ll be that much deadlier now that Antonio Cromartie joins Darrelle Revis in the secondary. Meanwhile, the Ravens’ aerial attack is ready to reach the next level with Anquan Boldin and Donte Stallworth joining the fray.

I think the Ravens will be the one to make a statement this time around. Joe Flacco is mature beyond his years and he has a strong O-line protecting him. Mark Sanchez may show some rust as he starts his sophomore season under center.

Pick: Ravens +3

San Diego Chargers @ Kansas City Chiefs

Monday, September 13, 10:15 p.m. ET
Week 1 NFL gambling favorite: Chargers -6

Pick the Chiefs. Before you go crazy – I still absolutely believe the Chargers will run away with the AFC West and that the Chiefs will struggle yet again. But consider the circumstances in the season opener. We’re at Arrowhead, one of the best home environments in the NFL. We have a clean slate and renewed hope for a team that should run the ball very well with Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones this season – facing a suspect run defense.

Also – even though the Chargers will be fine in the long run, they’ve had the wind taken out of their sales with Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill holding out (probably until Week 10). Opening on the road without your star wideout and left tackle is a tall order. I think the Chiefs can beat that spread.

Pick: Chiefs +6
