The way the AFC Championship Game went down is perfect for Seahawks backers, as that’s led the public to buy into the Patriots as the dominant side in this matchup, but that was really more a case of circumstance. The Indianapolis Colts had no business being in that game, but a soft playoff schedule allowed them to cruise through to New England.

Now the Patriots take a step up in class to take on the Seahawks, who needed a lot of luck to get by the Green Bay Packers.

The script is playing out very similarly to what we saw from the Seahawks a year ago. They went into the Big Game coming off a tight win over the San Francisco 49ers, causing bettors to side with the Denver Broncos, and we all know how that one went down.

The Patriots’ undersized wide receivers are going to have plenty of trouble creating space against the Seahawks’ physical cornerbacks.

That, combined with the Seahawks’ ability to get to the quarterback with their front-four will lead to a long day for Tom Brady.

As for the Seahawks’ offense, they took a lot of heat for their play against the Packers, but that unit has been able to move the football when needed, starting with running back Marshawn Lynch, who is averaging 5.7 yards per carry with five touchdowns in his last five games.

Free Seahawks vs. Patriots Pick:

While the Seattle defense gets all the press, the New England defense has been terrific in its own right. The Patriots are strong up front, have an underrated linebacking corps, and have one of the best secondaries in football.

The extra time to prepare will also mean head coach Bill Belichick will have additional time to put together a scheme that will frustrate the Seahawks’ offense.

The Seahawks struggled to move the ball against the Packers, and while they’re better offensively than they looked last week, they’re not going to put a ton of points up here.

As for the Patriots, going up against a physical Seahawks defense has to be a concern.

Their undersized receivers are going to have difficulty getting off the line, let alone getting open, and unlike the AFC title game against the Colts, leaning on the run won’t be an option against Seattle’s solid defensive front.

NFL Betting Trends:

  • The under is 11-5 in the Seahawks’ last 16 games against opponents with a winning record, and it is 4-1 in the Patriots’ last five Super Bowl games.
  • Under is 7-3 in Patriots last 10 games on grass.
  • Under is 4-1 in Seahawks last 5 games after accumulating more than 150 yards rushing in their previous game.
  • Under is 11-5 in Seahawks last 16 vs. a team with a winning record.

The play: Under 48

My money is on the Pats beating an over confidant Seahawk team. The biggest difference I’ve seen in the 2014 Pats is grit. This year’s team isn’t the over powering team we’ve seen in past years, you know the team that scored over 500 points during the regular season or the team that went on an 18-0 blitz through the league.

Just one week prior to their 7 game win streak, sports writers, sports announcers and analysts all but declared the Pats dead. During that streak they only had one game that was close but most importantly it was a win. Over the last 5 games of the season they went 3-2 while losing @ Green Bay by a mere 5 points, squeaking out a win against the Jets, and in the last game of the season with the best record locked up losing to Buffalo by 8 points. Once again during that 5 game stretch the talking heads were asking what happened to the Pats. Well, in a nutshell, nothing happened. Its the character this team has displayed this year with the players you have.

Excluding Gronk one has to admit this years receiving corp are not household names unless that household is Edelman or LaFell or Amendola but still this team finished 10-2 since that awful defeat at the hands of KC. Add to the receiver situation the lack of a consistent group of running backs, which was hit by injuries and still this team has shown they have what it takes to win it all.
