Coming into this season the Nebraska Cornhuskers were favorites to win the Big XII North. If last Saturday’s performance was any indication, that prediction might have been a bad one.

In that game, Texas Tech came to Lincoln and shocked the Cornhuskers 31-10. While Nebraska wasn’t terrible, there have to be concerns for a defense that gave up 24 first half points.

Coming into that game, the Cornhuskers actually had one of college football’s best defenses, period. Even after the loss, they ranked 6th in scoring defense (11 points) and 12th in total defense allowing just 271 yards per game. However Nebraska was exposed as a team you can beat through the air, as Steven Sheffield threw for 232 yards on the afternoon.

Of equal concern has to be the struggles of the Cornhuskers offense. On the season, they are scoring 32 points, but most of that has come against second rate competition. In two Big XII games so far, they’ve scored just three first half points, and have found themselves behind at the half in each. Last week’s starter Zac Lee may be replaced by Cody Green for this one, although coach Bo Pelini has not made an official decision yet.

Iowa State Cyclones on the other hand, is quietly putting together a solid season. Under first year coach Paul Rhoads, they are 4-2, with two very close defeats to Kansas State and Kansas in the last three weeks. They finally broke through a week ago however, beating Baylor for their first conference win of the year.

Offensively, this group is led by quarterback Austen Arnaud. On the season, Arnaud has thrown for over 1200 yards and nine touchdowns, while rushing for another seven. Backup quarterback Jerome Tiller played a week ago as well, providing a change of pace back for the Cyclones.

Defensively, Iowa State has been better than people realize, giving up just 21 points a game. Whether they can get pressure on Nebraska’s quarterback this weekend could be the difference in this game.

While this game is not going to get the nationally notoriety that others may, it is very important for both teams. As was said earlier, Nebraska has real strong hopes of winning the Big XII North, while this game would be a huge victory for Iowa State in their hopes of going to a bowl game this year.

Nebraska is at home, and is playing really good defense, besides their first half meltdown last weekend. But with uncertainty at quarterback, I’m just not sure that they have enough weapons on offense to cover the point spread as close to a three touchdown underdog.

Pick: Iowa State +19
