Illinois has now lost four games in a row, and each of those games has been by double digits. Throw in a non-conference game against Missouri, and the Illini has been outscored by a 153-54 margin when facing Division I competition. They have yet to cover a game against the college football betting lines.

How has this happened? Well, let’s start with Juice WIlliams. The enigmatic quarterback, who has always had high hopes attached to him because of his ability to pass or run, has not done a particularly good job with either one this season. Williams has completed 56% of his passes for 6.2 yards an attempt, and only four TD passes.

He ranks only 93rd nationally in passing efficiency and has only 239 net rushing yards. He was actually benched in the Michigan State game in favor of Eddie McGee, who couldn’t get the job done either.

What has happened as a result is that Arrelious Benn, who was looking to make a case as an All-American and possible Heisman contender, has had a disappointing season, with only 22 catches for 271 yards. He’s a lot better than that.

Illinois is also 105th nationally in total defense, allowing 421 yards a game. Is it any wonder why Ron Zook may find himself out of a job at season’s end?

Purdue pulled off a big upset in the college football betting lines over Big Ten power Ohio State last week, and they were aided by the Buckeyes coughing up three fumbles, not to mention a pair of interceptions by Terelle Pryor. They also got 31 completions and 281 yards out of Joey Elliott.

There is no doubt the Illini have had problems getting the ball across the goal line, but I saw some progress coming out of this team last week.

Williams, after getting the wake-up call from Zook, threw for 258 yards and two TD’s against Indiana, and Benn had a good game, with 95 yards. AJ Jenkins, who averaged 26 yards a catch last year, may be getting more of a chance to play, and responding.

I would actually give Illinois a slight edge defensively over the Purdue stop unit, and I doubt Purdue is going to benefit from five turnovers again, or at least they can’t sit there and count on it.

Let’s see how well Purdue can keep up its intensity after the big win last week. We’re willing to explore the underdog here, grabbing ten points with Illinois in the BetUS college football betting lines.
