Virginia Cavaliers 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015 Football Previews – (ACC) – Cavaliers

Virginia needed to go bowling a year ago in order to save head coach Mike London’s job – or so we all thought. The Cavaliers went 5-7, picking up just a single victory after Oct. 4. Last season, but London returns for a sixth season. London is a good recruiter, and the talent in Charlottesvile is improving, even if the results aren’t.

London and his players will find themselves on the hot seat once again this season. Turning around an annually underachieving offense has to be goal No. 1. The team needs someone to step up and grab hold of the starting quarterback spot.

The state of the offense is particularly important this season, as the defense is missing some key pieces from a year ago. The secondary remains strong, but the unit could have some trouble getting to opposing quarterbacks, losing 33 sacks from a year ago.

Team Strengths

The team’s fullbacks will be key this upcoming season. The struggles in the running game a year ago really held the offense back. Connor Wingo-Reeves and Vincent Croce will be asked to put their bodies on the line to help the Cavaliers establish offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild’s power running game.

The team averaged just 3.7 yards per carry a year ago. By setting up the running game, that will open up space in the passing game, to get big-play wide receivers T.J. Thorpe and Canaan Severin the opportunity to make some of those big plays.

The defense will be keyed by the secondary, and that unit will be led by safety Quin Blanding and cornerback Maurice Canady. Blanding impressed as a freshman, leading the team with 123 tackles en route to being named ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year. Canady established himself as one of the top defenders in the college ranks a year ago, and looks to carry that over into his senior season.

Team Weaknesses

Quarterback Matt Johns has looked good enough to inspire his main competition – Greyson Lambert – to transfer. But the position has been a hole for the Cavaliers in recent years. Fairchild hopes to simplify things as much as possible for his quarterback, and while the team has some helpful wide receivers around him, he’ll have a lot to prove before the time comes to trust in the Cavaliers’ quarterback.

The Cavaliers have used six different quarterbacks in London’s five seasons with the program. None has ranked in the top half of the ACC in passer rating.

While the defense carried the team in 2014, Jon Tenuta will have some work to do in rebuilding the front seven for this season. The team was strong off the edge, but the players with the three highest sacks totals – Eli Harold, Max Valles, and Henry Coley – are all gone.

2015 Virginia Cavaliers Football Prediction: 5-7

There’s nothing particularly favorable about this year’s schedule for Virginia, with a trip to UCLA to open the season, and a non-conference game against a good and improving Boise State squad. Road trips to Miami and Louisville won’t be any easier.

If they still need that elusive sixth win in the regular-season finale, getting it against Virginia Tech on Nov. 28 won’t come easy. The Hokies have won 11 in a row in the series, including a 24-20 defeat this past season. The two sides will meet at Scott Stadium this season, and it could be Coach London’s last chance to pick up that elusive win.
