Western Michigan
The Broncos of Western Michigan have been very inconsistent so far this year. Last week at Ball State they looked great, but the previous two weeks they lost at home to Toledo and Idaho. Turnovers have been a big problem for this team.
The Broncos offense is led by sophomore quarterback Alex Carder. Carder is fairly mobile, but he primarily airs it out. The problem so far has been that he is a little careless with the football. In their five games he has thrown seven interceptions. It doesn’t help Carder that this offense has absolutely no running game. They only average 103 yards per game on the ground, which means this offense has no balance. Opposing defenses put heat on Carder quickly because of a subpar offensive line as well. This offense has slipped quite a bit from its production level of the past few years.
Western Michigan’s defense has been put in bad positions quite often this year because of the turnover problems the offense has. This unit is allowing 28 points per game, but they do a pretty solid job in the secondary. The rushing defense tends to get beaten off the ball far too often.
Expect Notre Dame to try to run the football early and often on this team. 
Notre Dame
The positive for the Fighting Irish is that they are starting to play some better football. The negative news from this week is that they will be without the services of Kyle Rudolph the rest of the season. Rudolph is considered the top tight end in the country, so this will be a big loss for the team.
The Notre Dame offense has begun to hit their stride of late. Dayne Crist is doing a very good job at the quarterback position for the Fighting Irish. Crist has thrown for 1,600 yards already this year, and he has 11 touchdown passes compared to just four interceptions. Armando Allen doesn’t have spectacular rushing numbers, but he is an important part of this offense. Michael Floyd and Theo Riddick give Crist a nice pair of targets on the outside. The offensive line seems to be coming together much better in the last couple games. As the team gets accustomed to Brian Kelly’s offense they should continue to improve.
The Notre Dame defense is definitely the weak spot for this team. They are allowing 398 yards per game and 23.5 points per game. They are decent against the run, but they are ranked 100th in the nation in pass defense. It will be interesting to see how they stand up this week against a team that throws the ball as often as Western Michigan does. Can Notre Dame get pressure on the quarterback and force some errant throws?
The Pick:
The Notre Dame offense should be able to do whatever they want in this one. At the same time, Western Michigan will probably get some yards through the air as well. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a couple easy scores from turnovers, which would also help the over. I like over 52 in this one.
