Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys Preview

Get ready for a likely barnburner this Saturday night as the Oklahoma State Cowboys (2-0) host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-1). These teams can really light up the scoreboard, as both teams rank in the top 20 in the nation in passing yards per game and Oklahoma St. ranks 4th in the nation in scoring and Tulsa ranks 21st.

Oklahoma St. is playing their 3rd straight game at home and in their first 2 games they have scored a total of 106 points. However, while the Cowboys have a great offense their D is a concern ranking 84th in the nation in points against and they gave up 38 points last week.

Tulsa lost a tough 51-49 game to a tough East Carolina team in their season opener before getting in the W column last week against Bowling Green. The Golden Hurricane can really air it out and they have the nation’s 4th ranked passing offense averaging 377.5 yards per game.

OSU begins Big 12 play next week against a solid Texas A&M team and they will have a tough time winning the conference facing 3 teams this season in the Big 12 that are currently ranked in the top 10.

Tulsa has a chance to get to a bowl game for the first time since 2008 after missing out on a forgettable 2009 season and this season they only face one team that is currently ranked in the top 25 in the nation.

Heading into this non-conference game OSU is 1-1 ATS and Tulsa is 0-2 ATS.

Last week OSU beat Troy 41-38 and Tulsa beat Bowling Green 33-20.

Last week the Cowboys had 5 turnovers in their win over Troy and they have to hold onto the ball against Tulsa.

Oklahoma St. ranks 17th in the nation in passing yards per game (300.5) and the Cowboys’ offense is led by QB Brandon Weeden, who was 29/39 for 348 yards with 2 TD in the win over Troy, but he did have 2 INT’s. He has 2 legit targets in the WR duo of Justin Blackmon and Josh Cooper, who both averaged at least 13 yards per catch against Troy.

The Tulsa secondary will have their hands full in this game and last week they gave up 262 passing yards in the win against Bowling Green.

The weakness of the Tulsa defense is their pass rush and giving up the big play. That is not a good thing facing the strong passing attack of OSU.

Cowboys’ RB Kendall Hunter led the Big 12 in rushing last year and he had 157 rushing yards with 2 TD in last week’s win.

Tulsa is all about the pass baby averaging 377.5 yards per game. The Golden Hurricane are led by QB G.J. Kinne, who torched Bowling Green for 356 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT. He has several legit WR targets and he will be facing an OSU pass defense that gave up 270 yards through the air last week and 212 in their opening game against Washington State.

The Cowboys’ defense is very quick up front and they will have to pressure Kinne so he does not exploit a sketchy OSU secondary.

Tulsa’s rushing offense, which picked up 190 yards last week against Bowling Green, is led by the RB duo of Alex Singleton and Trey Watts, who will have to pick up some yards so the OSU D does not only look to contain the Tulsa aerial attack.

Last season Tulsa ranked 118th allowing just over 4 sacks per game and they have to protect Kinne against a quick and athletic front line D of the Cowboys.

Both teams can air it out, but the Cowboys also feature a great rushing offense led by All American candidate Kendall Hunter. OSU will play great on offense and even though their D has issues Tulsa will not be able to out-shoot the Cowboys, as they will win this game and cover the spread and go to 3-0 on the season.

Trends:
Tulsa is 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games, 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall, and has an Under record of 6-0 in their last 6 non-conference games.
Oklahoma State is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games, 1-4 in their last 5 games overall, and has an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 games following an ATS loss.
In the last 6 games between these 2 teams the home team is 5-1 ATS.

Pick: Oklahoma State -7
