The Battle of the SEC’s Tigers should be an interesting one. Both teams have pleasantly surprised the college football world (albeit LSU more than Auburn). Both sides are unbeaten, in fact. Yet the teams have stayed unbeaten using a very different formula; defense and moxie for LSU, an all-world pivot for Auburn.

The most impressive wins LSU can boast about this season are versus North Carolina, West Virginia and Florida. Impressive, no doubt, but these next two weeks are truly the teeth of the Tigers’ schedule. After Auburn in unfriendly territory, Alabama comes to Baton Rouge next weekend. These next two weeks will be when we truly see what LSU is made of.

How has there been enough offense, you ask? The QB tandem of Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee has done just enough, while RB Stevan Ridley has been steady, with almost 700 yards, six scores and a workmanlike 4.9 yards per carry. LSU’s defense has been its usual self: Florida is the only team this season to score more than 24 points on the Tigers. There are a lot of names, but CB/return man Patrick Peterson, in particular, is a stud.

Still, Florida put 29 on the Tigers and Auburn has a more explosive attack than Florida’s this season. If LSU can somehow continue the stout trend this week, it should be a great game. Yet Auburn’s Cam Newton has proven that to be impossible thus far in 2010.

Auburn

Newton continues to guide Auburn in the air and (primarily) on the ground to a pristine record. He is just too much of a match-up nightmare for defenses; a more explosive Terrelle Pryor that rises to the occasion in big moments, if you wish. Short of Newton getting lost in the Bermuda Triangle, Auburn is the favorite in this game.

Last week, Auburn proved that when a good offense scores on it, it comes back with a response – again, and again. Allowing 40+ points to Arkansas was embarrassing last week, but scoring 60+ points outweighed the negative. The good news is that LSU doesn’t have a quarterback like Ryan Mallett and though its running game is potent – Ridley is putting together a solid season and Jefferson can scramble – it shouldn’t be anything Auburn will be overwhelmed with.

The Pick: LSU has impressed thus far, but UNC was overrated, West Virginia is in the Big East and Florida is having an uncharacteristic down year. These factors add up to LSU being brought back to Earth this Saturday in the land of Dixie.

Gambling Trends:

LSU is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games when playing Auburn
LSU is 14-6 SU in its last 20 games on the road
Auburn is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
Auburn is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home
Auburn is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games when playing at home against LSU
The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Auburn’s last 9 games when playing LSU
