Free Pick: #7 UCLA vs. Virginia Betting Odds & NCAA Preview

Week 1: #7 Bruins vs Cavaliers Odds

College football Week 1 betting action sees the #7 UCLA Bruins taking on the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday August 29th at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. Cappers Picks provides free NCAA football handicapping tips all season long.

The showdown between UCLA and Virginia seems to be centered around UCLA Heisman hopeful QB Brett Hundley. Virginia would like to put that to rest with an upset victory that would continue their current streak of 4 straight opening game wins.

The hype surrounding the UCLA quarterback may be warranted, but Virginia has a counterpoint to that: a strong defense. With both schools returning many starters, including star players, this could be a much more interesting matchup than people predict.

UCLA

Brett Hundley was the leading passer as well as the leading rusher for the Bruins last season. Head Coach Jim Mora would like to change the latter, throwing a trio of backs in to help the signal caller: Jordon James (534 yards in 2013), Paul Perkins (573 yards in 2013), and Myles Jack (267 yards in 2013).

Speaking of Jack, he was also dominant as a linebacker last season, tallying 75 tackles and 2 interceptions.

Linebacker Eric Kendricks (106 tackles in 2013), Safeties Randall Goforth (78 tackles, 3 interceptions) and Anthony Jefferson (89 tackles, 2 interceptions) are just a few of the many returning starters this season as well, proving it may not just be the Brett Hundley show this season in Pasadena.

A couple related side notes: Jim Mora has already won more games in his first two season as head coach of the Bruins than any other coach in school history. This is only the second time UCLA has played in an ACC stadium.

Virginia

Things are going to be tough for Virginia this season. Between a non-conference schedule with UCLA on it to go with their ACC gauntlet, the team is going to rely heavily on its defense. Last season, the Cavaliers forced an average of six three-and-out’s per game.

They also held opponents to a 32% average on third down.

Leading the defensive charge is standout Anthony Harris who led the nation with 8 interceptions last season. Also returning on defense is the rest of the experienced secondary in Demetrious Nicholson and  Brandon Phelps.

On offense, the changing of the guard at QB came with a surprise as previous starter David Watford was beat out for the starting job this season by sophomore Greyson Lambert. Last season, Watford threw for 2,202 but only 8 touchdowns to his 15 interceptions. Returning to help Lambert are senior RB Kevin Parks and senior WR Darius Jennings.

NCAA football handicapping trends

  • Bruins are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games
  • Bruins are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall
  • Cavaliers are 7-17-2 ATS in their last 26 games overall
  • Cavaliers are 3-11-2 ATS in their last 16 home games
  • Cavaliers are 2-9-1 ATS in their last 12 non-conference games

Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction

While Virginia is hopeful and has a couple things going in their favor, they just don’t have the talent to stop a top ten team. Even if Harris gets a hold of a Hundley pass, it won’t make a difference.

UCLA will begin its season with a statement victory.
