This is the first time meeting between Northern Iowa and Hawaii. Hawaii is 8-0 in their last 8 FCS games and is 10 for their last 11. Hawaii is 0-2 against the Missouri Valley Football Conference so far and Northern Iowa would like to make that 0-3 after Saturday night.

Northern Iowa

The Panthers played as well as you could in a loss in their week one tilt with Iowa. Starting quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen had a career-high 380 yards through the air against Iowa, including 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Also with a career high in the game was WR David Johnson who had 5 grabs for 203 yards and a touchdown. Johnson was also the leading rusher in the contest for Northern Iowa, carrying the ball 13 times for 34 yards. Johnson has 994 all-purpose yards in 5 games against FBS schools.

While the game against Iowa was a loss, the defense showed up big time. They made several key stops before finally losing the lead with just over 6 minutes left in the game.

Brett McMakin had a career-high 11 tackles against Iowa while Jake Farley registered 12 and Xavier Williams had 10.

Northern Iowa has done well at the FCS level, finishing 10 of their last 13 seasons ranked in the top 25 and has gone to the FCS playoffs 16 times in school history to go with their 16 MVFC titles.

In the last 25 years, Northern Iowa is 10-24 against FBS schools.

Hawaii

Despite two strong showings against Pac-12 schools, Hawaii still has nothing to show for it. While the team has grown accustomed to that, they were looking for a repeat of last season when they went into Corvallis and defeated the then-ranked Beavers of Oregon State.

In week 1, both starting QB Ikaika Woolsey and RB Joey Iosefa had strong games against Washington. Woolsey racked up 207 yards through the air and Iosefa gained 143 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

In week 2, Woolsey threw for 236 yards and an interception while Iosefa had 54 yards and 3 touchdowns.

This week, though, the team is without RB Joey Iosefa, who is out 4-6 weeks with a fractured ankle. And while Steven Lakalaka will fill in for Iosefa, Woolsey may take over the running game, too.

On the season Woolsey has carried the ball 21 times for 65 yards. Lakalaka has 15 carries for 49 yards on the year.

The one thing Hawaii has going for them is defense. In the 4th quarter of the team’s previous two games, the Rainbow Warriors held opponents to 95 yards of total offense, including a measly 7 pass yards. This could become a factor as they had been trying to fend off Pac-12 schools.

This time, they get to go against an FCS who is winless against the Mountain West Conference. (0-4)

Week 3 NCAA Football Prediction

This one is tough. With no spread and no line, there are a lot of factors to consider.

Free NCAA Betting Pick: Northern Iowa SU

While Hawaii has played well defensively late in games, they are without their star running back. Woolsey will pick up the slack, but he won’t be able to handle it all.

Northern Iowa pulls off the “upset” in this one.

Final Week 3 Score: Northern Illinois 17 – Hawaii 14
