Florida Gators 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015 Football Previews – (SEC) – Gators

The Florida Gators gave Will Muschamp his last chance a year ago, and he didn’t do enough to save his job. Now Jim McElwain takes over in Gainesville with an eye on turning the Gators around in a hurry, but all signs point to a rebuilding year.

Southeastern Conference 2015 College Football Preview – Florida Gators
Head Coach: Jim McElwain
2014 Record: 7-5
Florida Odds to win the SEC: 30-1

McElwain never won a Mountain West title while at Colorado State, but he turned that program around in a hurry, making the Rams a double-digit win team this past year. He doesn’t bring the star power of his predecessors, however.

Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer each came to Gainesville with proven track records, and even Will Muschamp came to town with a strong resume, but that isn’t to say McElwain won’t be a hit with the Gators, though the fan base may be getting a little impatient.

Team Strengths

Junior wide receiver Demarcus Robinson has shown flashes of his ability in his young career, but he’s dealt with quarterback issues, which have limited his ability to take the next step. Now he’ll work under a great offensive mind in McElwain, whose offense helped make Rashard Higgins into a superstar at Colorado State. Robinson could be at the head of a receiving corps that’s ready to break out.

While McElwain may be an offensive coach, the strength of this team is still its defense. That unit is keyed by standout cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III. He projects as an elite talent at the next level, and McElwain has raved about Hargreaves’ work ethic and willingness to improve the holes in his game.

Also back is senior linebacker Antonio Morrison, who led the team in tackles a year ago. Morrison logged 10 or more tackles in six games last season, playing both inside and out. He’ll likely be moved around within the linebacking corps one again this season.

Team Weaknesses

Finding offense has been very difficult in Gainesville in recent years. While dropping the defensive-minded Muschamp in favor of the offensive-minded McElwain will help, there’s still a matter of the talent currently in town, and how quickly McElwain can bring in recruits to turn things around.

The Gators have had a hole at the quarterback position for years now, and will try to maximize the talents of either Treon Harris or Will Grier. They’ll likely have trouble finding time in the pocket behind an inexperienced, rebuilt offensive line.

2015 Florida Gators Prediction: 5-7

Looking strictly at the talent on the roster and ignoring the cache that comes with the Gator brand and one would see a team that is clearly in a rebuild. The schedule works out to be a little easier than in recent years, even with a trip to LSU and a home date against Ole Miss on the crossover.

East Carolina had some fine moments a year ago, but a lot of the players responsible for that are gone, and getting Florida State at home in the finale is certainly favorable. The team won’t play a home game for a calendar month from the beginning of October to the beginning of November.

Should they need to make a push to get to 6-6 late in the year, getting Florida Atlantic in a cupcake home matchup prior to facing the Seminoles in Gainesville is something to look forward to. That early road game at Kentucky to open the team’s SEC schedule is not one they’ll want to look past.
