2015 Mountain West Conference: NCAA Football Gambling Predictions | Futures

2015 Mountain West Football Season Preview

Another CFB conference preview for you here from Cappers Picks folks! There was a time not that long ago when the Mountain West was sometimes considered stronger than the ACC and the Big East.

With Boise State and TCU Top Ten calibre teams and the likes of BYU, San Diego State, Fresno State, Nevada and even Air Force very competitive there was buzz about what the upstart could accomplish. (Memories!)

Now that seems like a long time ago.  BYU are TCU are long gone and some of the balance of power has shifted.

Boise State is still among the top programs in America and is expected to win their division and the conference with relative ease this season.

Utah State is probably the second best team in the conference but is unlucky to have to reside in the same division as Boise so their title hopes will hinge on their regular season tilt in mid October.

In the West Division the top team, San Diego State, is not as much of an outlier. Further their style of play is such that even games that aren’t all that close in reality might look that way on paper.

The MWC won’t captivate us this season but it is still well ahead of most of the Group of 5.

Boise State -300

I know the Broncos are not competing for national titles year in and year out but it is hard to argue with their long term success rate.

This season they will have to find a new quarterback to helm their signature attack but since that seems to be about the only significant question mark it is hard to think they won’t at the very least win a division title.

Given the way this program handles transition I  am confident they will get what they need from the position and then some. An undefeated season will have Boise State making things very interesting for that playoff selection committee.

That is a very real possibility but it still might not be enough.

San Diego State +600

With coach Rocky Long at the helm the Aztecs are wanting to look like the vintage New York Giants. They have a very strong defense and a running attack, even though it is led by the diminutive Donnel Pumphrey, that can pound away at you.

If transfer QB Maxwell Smith solidifies the QB position at a high level maybe the ceiling of this club is more than just the likely West Division representative. Outside of the conference I wouldn’t take these guys too lightly.

Utah State +1000

This is going to be the swansong for Aggies QB Chuckie Keeton (it seems like he has been on campus forever, doesn’t it?). He is a true playmaker and if he can lead a home win over Boise State he has a chance to really go out on top.

This group also plays Utah, Washington and BYU in the nonconference. I think they have a shot at taking at least one of those games and using a strong MWC campaign to be in the Top 25 for some of the season.

Too much?

Air Force +1600

I am not saying this is an all time Falcons team or anything but they can beat every MWC team on their schedule save the ones in their division already mentioned above.

Their triple option offense is difficult to prepare for and they get Utah State at home so who knows, maybe they steal that one.

Maybe the Falcons are 6-2 in the MWC this season, 7-1 if they get a little lucky.

Projected 2015 Mountain West Conference Standings:

East Division

  1.  Boise State -300
  2.  Utah State +1000
  3.  Colorado State +1800
  4.  Air Force +1600
  5.  New Mexico +8000
  6.  Wyoming +6600

West Division

  1. San Diego State +600
  2. Fresno State +2800
  3. Nevada +2500
  4. San Jose State +6600
  5. Hawaii +6600
  6. UNLV +30000

Best Bet:  Boise State of course. The problem is you can’t make any money backing these guys. But they are unlikely to burn you and they generally perform well in big games. I just won’t bet it because the risk is not worth the payoff.

Best Value:  San Diego State. When you look at the numbers they are huge favourites to take the West Division and in a single game championship you never know. Maybe they even don’t have to face Boise State. Against any other team they would probably be the favorite.
