The 2011 Big East Tournament’s first round action pits the No.13 seed Rutgers Scarlet Knights against the No.12 seed Seton Hall Pirates this Tuesday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. Game time is set for 2 p.m. and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.

Rutgers crashed and burned down the stretch with just two wins in its final 11 games. The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 75-74 loss to Providence as a 3 ½-point road underdog in their final regular season game. The loss closed out their record at 14-16 straight-up overall and 12-12-2 against the spread. They went 5-13 SU in Big East play.

Jonathan Mitchell leads the team in scoring with 14.2 points a game and is second in rebounds with 5.7. Dane Miller is averaging 9.3 points a game and a team-high six rebounds a game and Mike Coburn leads the Scarlet Knights in assists with an average of four a game. Rutgers is shooting 44.3 percent from the field and scoring an average of 66 points a game.

Seton Hall closed out its season on a strong note with a shocking 84-70 victory over No.15 St.John’s last Thursday as a three-point home favorite and an 85-72 win over Marquette as a one-point home favorite this past Saturday. The Pirates finished the year at 13-17 SU overall (14-14 ATS) and 7-11 in the conference.

Jeremy Hazell has come on as of late for Seton Hall with an average of 19.4 points a game. Jeff Robinson is second in scoring with 12.1 points a game and Herb Pope leads the team in rebounds with 10 a game. The Pirates are averaging 67 points and 36 rebounds a game.

These two teams split this season with Rutgers winning 66-60 in January as a six-point road underdog and Seton Hall returning the favor with a 69-64 victory as a 2 ½-point road underdog on Feb.12. The momentum is definitely with the Pirates in this one as they advance onto the second round in another tight win over the Knights.
