Tom Izzo has led his squad from the #7 spot with multiple upset victories this tournament. On the flip side of things, Mike Krzyewski has had little trouble navigating his team from the #1 seed.

Michigan State

Are the Spartans the team of destiny this season? Like last years’ National Champion Uconn, the Spartans are making this run as the #7 seed and like Uconn, have knocked off the #10 seed, #2 seed, #3 seed, and #4 seed in the East.

The similarities are nearly identical, but do they have enough fire power to stop the Blue Devils?

Michigan State hasn’t blown anybody out this tournament, but they’ve done the most important thing, found a way to win and advance.

Things started off with them withstanding a late run from #10 seed Georgia as Sparty held on for a 70-63 victory.

They then upset the #2 out of the East, Virginia, as Michigan State dominated from start to finish en route to a 60-54 defensive win.

The #3 Oklahoma Sooners looked to be on their way to knocking out Izzo and company, but Michigan State got some late clutch shots from Travis Trice as they came from behind to win 62-58.

Then, Michigan State got a little bit of luck to go their way as Louisville hit only 1 of 2 free throws at the end of regulation and the Spartans controlled the overtime session as they knocked off the #4 seed 76-70.

Expect the Spartans to try and control the clock as they hope Trice and company can control the paint in what should be a physical battle down low.

Duke

The Blue Devils haven’t had much trouble in their path to the Final Four. C Jahlil Okafor has led the charge as Duke ran through the #16 seed, #8 seed, #5 seed, and #2 seed in the South Region.

In their first contest against #16 Robert Morris, the Blue Devils only saw Robert Morris get within as many as 10 in the 2nd half as they routed them in a 85-56 decision. Jahlil Okafor went for 21 points and 3 rebounds.

In their 2nd game, they once again proved to be too physical for the competition as the Aztecs proved no contest. Duke ran away with the game as they advanced with a 68-49 win. Once again, Okafor had an outstanding game as the center went for 26 and 6.

The Sweet 16 game was the closest anybody has come to Duke this tournament. The 5th seeded Utah Utes lost only by 6 in a 63-57 game, but the game felt like it was controlled by Duke the entire way.

Duke then pulled away from the #2 seed Gonzaga 66-52 as they held Gonzaga scoreless over a 5 minute stretch in the 2nd half.

The Blue Devils will look to continue what has worked this tournament as they run their offense through Jahlil Okafor.

NCAA Basketball Trends:

  • Spartans are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games following a S.U. win.
  • Spartans are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games.
  • Blue Devils are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS win.
  • Blue Devils are 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 Saturday games.
