2009/2010 Season Preview: Michigan Wolverines Predictions (Big 10)

  • Bodog.com Betting Odds – Michigan Odds To Win 2009/10 National Championship – 75/1

With the way that the football season has nosedived after a promising start I am sure that many Big Blue fans can’t wait until the first hoops tipoff. Better yet they are entering the season with increased expectations for a program that has been pretty quiet since the last of the Fab Five graduated. Many have this team only a hair below Purdue and Michigan State in the Big Ten.They should be good but I think the gap is a little bigger. Although they have proven they can win a big game now and again.

The Wolverines are thought of so highly because they have a really good coach and a great inside-outside tandem. Coach John Beilein has had great success every where he has been and his system works. When he has talent to plug into that system it works even better. In the duo of Manny Harris and DeShawn Sims he has just that. Harris is an old-fashioned scorer, a slasher and a shooter who can be relied on in the clutch. Sims is willing and able to bang in the post to get his rebounds and points, his offensive game improves every year.

A big change this year for the Wolverines should be consistency. Last year they had some great wins against top teams (UCLA, Duke) but they were just as likely to lose to a lower division team like Iowa . Another year in the system and another year in the development of Harris and Sims and this team could be peaking right around tournament time.

Surprising Stat

2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS against top 5 teams last year. 14-12 ATS against everybody else.Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

Strengths

Beilein knows how to coach offense and is able to build a team around a couple of talented pieces. This team has the pieces to be good, they have size and athleticism to matchup with the teams in the conference and when their top two players are on they can beat any of them.

Weaknesses

They are not very deep after Sims and Harris. The rest of the rotation are composed players who have lived on the margins and they need someone to step up. It would be great if that person was a consistent outside shooter.

Additions

Darius Morris – A big PG who might start right away. 4 Star recruit.
Blake McLimans – Provides length and shooting which Beilein covets.

Subtractions

No big losses – CJ Lee, Kelvin Grady and David Merritt were backups whose production should be easily replaced.

Key Players

Manny Harris – One of the best SGs in the country. His aggressive game can be a difference maker in tight games.
DeShawn Sims – One of the most rugged players in the conference. If he can reach another level this team will too.
***Its a mystery who will emerge as the teams third scorer.

Post Season

This team is getting back to being good again and should qualify for the NCAAs this year. Once they are there I don’t think they are up for a long run though.

Projected wins
