Tonight’s Hawks/Warriors tilt should make for an interesting clash of styles. The Hawks are the typical East team, with a bruising, defense-first mentality, whereas the Warriors fit the West mold as a high-flying group of shooters.

The Hawks have been a streaky team all season and are currently mired in a nasty slump. They’ve lost three straight and five of six, going 1-5 ATS over that time. In Atlanta’s defense, its schedule hasn’t been fun of late; the three straight defeats came at the Knicks, Lakers and Suns. The margins of defeat suggest the Hawks are tiring as they reach game five of a seven-game road trip. They lost to the Knicks by 12, the Lakers by 24 and the Suns by eight.

It’s easy to see what’s wrong with Atlanta. I don’t like to be mean and point fingers but it’s Joe Johnson, my friends. The Hawks’ leading scorer, who averages 19.3 points per game, is suffering through one of the worst stretches of his career. His point totals during the 1-5 skid: 6, 11, 14, 11, 14, 12. Those are sixth-man numbers, not the numbers of your supposed go-to guy.

Golden State is fresh off an embarrassing, 22-point home loss to the Boston Celtics. But the Warriors had won seven of nine before that point. One big loss won’t necessarily deflate their momentum. In fact, it could get Golden State back on track.

Even thought the Hawks are the NBA’s ninth-best defensive team, I think Golden State’s seventh-ranked offense could be a bad matchup for them. Josh Smith and Al Horford are great policeman under the basket but the Warriors are all about the perimeter shooting. They’re the NBA’s No. 2 three-point shooting team at 39.4 per cent. Monta Ellis is questionable tonight for a knee injury, so that means the Warriors may defer to deadly shooters Stephen Curry and Dorrell Wright even more than normal.

The Hawks are exhausted and look mentally broken of late. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it get ugly in Golden State tonight.
