Dallas point guard Jason Kidd drove a stake into the heart of a possible game-winning rally when he hit a trey that gave his club a two-point lead en route to a 101-97 victory at Boston on Friday night.

Dirk Nowitzki iced the game with two free throws.

Ray Allen had 24 points as the Celts came from eight down, but the Mavs made the bigger plays at the end.

Now Boston winners of four of its last six will look to get back on the rails as the host the Orlando Magic on Sunday afternoon.

The Celtics (37-12), have the best record in the East, and lead the league in field goal percentage with 50.0 and are the toughest team to score on in the NBA, allowing just 91.7 points per game while boating a third least field goal percentage against in the league at 43.9.

They also lead the league in three points made allowed with 5.3 per game, but were hit for eight of 17 treys against the Mavs. Not good considering the will face an Orlando squad that comes into Saturday’s matinee leading the league in three points made with 9.5 per game.

Paul Pierce is their leading scorer, but was all but silenced against Dallas going just 4-of-10 from the field.

Meanwhile, Kevin Garnett is playing at the level he did before his 2009 knee surgery, leading the team in rebounds with 8.9 per game.

However, the medical watch has been the larger story for Boston, as the team has had to battle through a series of injuries to key players all season long. Big man Shaquille O’Neal did not play against Dallas because of a sore Achilles tendon, and is questionable at best for Sunday’s meeting with Orlando.

As for the Magic, they are hoping their 110-92 win over the hapless Washington Wizards on Friday, is the beginning of the end of their recent slide, going 7-7 in their last 14 games. \

After a slow start, Orlando exploded hitting 10 of their 17 3-point attempts in the second half, as leading scorer Dwight Howard netted 22 points and 15 rebounds, leaving the Washington Wizards with their seventh consecutive loss. Howard had help from Ryan Anderson, who had 10 of his 19 points in the first quarter, Jason Richardson with 18 points and J.J. Redick, who had 15 points — 12 in the fourth quarter.

Orlando (32-19) forward Brandon Bass missed his second straight game with a sprained left ankle and is doubtful for Sunday’s game.

Orlando is 16-7 SU in its last 23 games while Boston is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games at home. The total has gone UNDER in 12 of Orlando’s last 16 games when playing Boston and in 6 of Orlando’s last 8 games when playing on the road against the Celts. Boston is 9-3 SU in its last 12 games.

Matt’s Free Prediction: I expect the Celtics to take this one but if the points spread stay at -4, the Magic may be a good dog to take in this Sunday’s matchup.
