The defending champion San Antonio Spurs have earned home-court advantage in their first game of the new year, as they’ll be hoisting their championship banner in front of their rivals, the Dallas Mavericks.

Last season, San Antonio went 62-20, which was good enough for the first seed out West, as well as the best record in the Association. This year, the team is another year older, having made no significant changes during the offseason, but age has yet to be a concern for this dynasty.

Leading the way is the Big Four if you will of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard. Although it’s the first three who have set the tone for this franchise throughout the years, it’s clear that Leonard is the future, as he’s coming off his best season yet — one that saw him take home the Finals MVP award against the Miami Heat.

For Dallas, this is a group that will have a bit of a new look to it.

The projected starting lineup as it stands just a few days before tipoff is slated to have three newcomers playing alongside the returning Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis.

The big name, of course, is Chandler Parsons. The Mavs swiped him away from the rivaled Houston Rockets, and they did it at a price that will put pressure on the youngster to perform right out of the gate.

Also new in the lineup is Jameer Nelson. The point guard is about ready to put on a jersey for the first time in his career that doesn’t say “Orlando” or “Magic” on the front, and he’ll help bring a veteran presence that Dallas needs at the point guard position.

The last newcomer is actually a returner. Tyson Chandler was a key cog in the team that won a championship in 2011, and while his presence won’t be enough to make the Mavs favorites entering this season, his defensive abilities give the team something it’s lacked ever since he left for the New York Knicks.

Free NBA Prediction:

The San Antonio Spurs are the favorites in this one for a reason. They’re the defending champions, they have a Big Four and maybe most importantly, they have Gregg Popovich running the sidelines.

The Spurs are 7.5-point favorites, but don’t count out Dallas just yet.

The Mavs have made improvements this offseason that can’t be ignored. They snuck into the playoffs last season when most didn’t expect them to, and they’re now ready to fight for a fourth or fifth seed if the stars align.

4* Free Pick: Dallas +7.5

Combine that with the fact that this is a rivalry game between two great franchises, and you should see a closer game than the opening line indicates.
