Seems like decades, but the Kings were actually a title contender a few years ago.
Now bad signings, bad players, bad coaching and a bad front office have forced the Kings to take their current spot among the serfs in the NBA.
Key players added – Tyreke Evans
Key players lost – Kenny Thomas
Looks like it could be a while before they dig themselves out.
Sacramento returns basically the same group that won only 17 games last season, with the notable exception of Tyreke Evans. The only thing preventing Evans from starting at the point for new coach Paul Westphal is if he manages to somehow trip over the halfcourt line.
Evans likes to shoot, in fact he likes to shoot a lot, and with last year’s leading scorer, Kevin Martin, in the same backcourt, much of Sacramento’s production will come from the backcourt.
That’s probably OK with Westphal, since the alternative is a starting a front line of Spencer Hawes, Jason Thompson and either Francisco Garcia or Andres Nocioni.
Westphal is a patient guy, and he’ll need every ounce of his patience with this bunch.
Surprising stat: Guess it’s not that surprising, but the Kings won more than one game in a row only once last season.
Strengths: The Kings weren’t half-bad offensively last season, ranking 12th in the league in points per game (100.6), but…
Weaknesses: …They were road kill defensively. Only Golden State was worse, mainly because the Kings were slaughtered on the offensive and defensive boards.
Playoffs? If they get within 10 games of the playoffs, the coach of the year award should be given to Paul Westphal.

The Kings didn’t lose Kenny Thomas. He and his deadweight $8+ million contract are still on the team.
Thanks for pointing that out Patrick. I stand corrected….LP
