Philadelphia kicks off the second half of the 2010 MLB season when they travel to Wrigley Field in Chicago for a four game series with the Cubs starting tonight at 8:05 P.M. (ET).
At the midway point of the season Philadelphia finds them self in unfamiliar territory; third place in the NL East and 4 ½ games in back of Atlanta. They have an overall record of 47-40 and are 6-4 SU in their last 10 including a four game sweep of the Reds right before the All-Star break. As an underdog they are 13-10 ATS and against the over/under line they are 40-46-1. The total has stayed under in five of their last six games in Chicago.
Left hander Jamie Moyer will be on the mound tonight for the Phillies. He is 9-8 on the year, getting a decision in all 17 of his prior starts. His ERA for the season is currently 4.51. In his last outing he only lasted 5.1 innings giving up seven hits and seven earned runs in a loss to Atlanta. Against the Cubs he is 3-2 with an ERA of 4.46.
Injuries have plagued the Phillies lineup with both Chase Utley and Placido Polanco still on the DL. As a team they are ranked 11th in the NL with a .255 batting average. They are ranked fifth in the league in runs scored with 410, and average of 4.71 per game.
Chicago finds them self in the midst of another disappointing season as they are 39-50 overall, 9 ½ games out of first. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games but lost three out of four to the Dodgers right before the break. The Cubs are 20-23 SU at home and 22-32 ATS as a favorite. Against the over/under line they are 35-47-7. The total has stayed under in five of their last seven games at home.
Ryan Dempster will get the start tonight for Chicago. In 18 previous starts this year he is 8-8 with an ERA of 3.61. In his last start he pitched five innings giving up eight hits and three earned runs but still got the win against Arizona. Against the Phillies he is 4-3 with a 5.15 ERA.
The Cubs hitting has been woeful this year as they are ranked 12th in the NL with a team batting average of .254 and 14th in total runs scored with 359. Alfonso Soriano leads the team with 44 RBI’s and 15 HR’s. Marlon Byrd leads the team in hits with 105.
Philadelphia desperately needs to get off to a good start to keep pace with the Braves and the Cubs could provide the perfect opportunity. The Phillies are 8-2 SU in their last 10 games against Chicago and 5-1 against them on the road. Stick with them tonight to run their winning streak to five.
