The Cardinals and Phillies square off in St. Louis, where wins have been coming pretty easily to the Cardinals thus far. The Cardinals bring in a 5-1 record inside Busch Stadium and will look to continue their dominance against a Phillies team that comes in off a series in.

The Phillies clinched a series win in the rubber match against Atlanta on Sunday thanks in large part to the bat of Ryan Howard.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies knew that coming into this season things weren’t going to be easy. With a young, inexperienced team, the only chance they have of competing is getting major contributions from their veterans.

Ryan Howard homered Sunday for the 2nd time in as many games en route to a win over the Braves. They’ll look to get their first major contribution from veteran Cole Hamels on Monday as he looks to run the win streak to two.

Cole Hamels has had recent struggles in his early starts of the season. April has always been a bad month for Hamels as he’s failed to win a start in his first 4 for the 3rd straight season.

So far in 2015, Hamels brings in an 0-2 record, but this time, it’s thanks in large part to the lack of run support he’s getting.

In his 4 starts, the Phillies have scored a combined 5 runs. Hamels’ best start came on April 11th when he went 7 innings allowing just 2 hits and 1 run against Washington. To no surprise, he received a no decision in the contest.

Like his first 4 starts this season, Hamels has received very little run support when facing the Cardinals over the last 5 seasons.

Hamels holds an 0-2 record, with just a 2.41 ERA against St. Louis.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals hope to continue their solid start to the season as they look to battle through some unfortunate injuries.

Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright landed on the DL following an Achilles injury and will miss an extended period of time.

Also, Yadier Molina will be out a couple days following a foul ball off his foot this past week. Still, the Cardinals have a solid core to lean on and it starts with John Lackey, Monday’s starting pitcher.

Lackey has started 3 games this season, 2 away and 1 at home. His lone win of those 3 starts came inside Busch Stadium.

On April 16th, Lackey went 7 strong innings allowing just 5 hits and 0 runs in a 4-0 win over Milwaukee.

As a member of the Cardinals, Lackey brings in a 3-0 home record with a 1.98 ERA over a span of 6 starts.

As a team, St. Louis has a combined 1.50 ERA at home in 6 games.

  • Phillies are 4-10 in their last 14 overall.
  • Cardinals are 11-4 in their last 15 during game 1 of a series.
