This will be as good a test as any as whether they can get back in the race.
Kansas City
The Royals have built a little cushion in the AL Central over Minnesota. They just took two of three against Seattle but traveling down to red hot Oakland will be a much stiffer challenge than the lifeless Mariners.

This year the Royals are scoring more than they did a year ago. They are second in average and have been able to get good, though not great production throughout the lineup. They are not mashers but they don’t strikeout either. Six regulars already have 30 RBIs, they are spreading the production around.
There were lots of good reasons to expect Edinson Volquez to fail with the Royals this season but he has been their best starter. Key for him has been keeping the ball in the park and it will be against an A’s team has more power than you think.
He still walks too many but he has gotten used to the formula of pitching 6 solid inning (or less) then letting the bullpen work.

The Royals have won 8 of his last 9 starts.
Oakland
The A’s still have a lot of work to do but they have won five in row and nine of eleven to sneak out of last place in the AL West. Led by Stephen Vogt they have been a good offensive club this season with Josh Reddick once again becoming a contributing player.
Like K.C. they have strong pitching numbers but are doing it mostly with the starters – all of the members of their rotation have sub 4.00 ERAs.
The pieces are there to get back in the race but they dug themselves quite a hole.
Jesse Hahn is in his first full season and is looking good.
He is not striking out as many guys as he did last year with San Diego but his walks are down and he is giving up even fewer homers while playing in the AL. Numbers wise he is their fourth starter but on most other teams he would be their #2.

He also has the team’s only complete game and shutout so he can get on a roll and stay there.
