NFL Week 3 Handicapping Tips

David Schwab weighs in with a short preview for Week three of the 2009 NFL season and provides some handicapping analysis…

NFL Week Three Match Ups

After two weeks of games there are nine teams with 2-0 records and nine teams with 0-2 records striking a perfect balance heading into week three. The big game this week pits the 2-0 Minnesota Vikings against the surprising 2-0 San Francisco 49ers in the only match up of undefeated teams.

Here is a brief look at all the match ups with some keys to the game.

Sunday, September 27th

Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens, 1 p.m.

The Ravens’ offense has been the big story so far this season as they have scored over 30 points in each of their first two games. Look for that trend to continue against the Browns.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals, 1 p.m.

The Steelers have won the last five games in this series, but the Bengals are a much better team than first expected. If Palmer has a big day Cincinnati could pull off the upset.

Washington Redskins at Detroit Lions, 1 p.m.

The Lions actually have a legitimate chance to win this game if they can avoid turning the ball over and continue to pressure Washington in the red zone, where the ‘Skins have struggled.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans, 1 p.m.

Jacksonville’s season hangs in the balance as a 0-3 start places them in a huge hole in the AFC South. If Houston’s offense shows up again this week they should be able to win.

San Francisco 49ers at Minnesota Vikings, 1 p.m.

This game features the top two running backs in the NFC, Adrian Peterson for the Vikings and Frank Gore for the 49ers. Whichever player has the biggest day should win.

Atlanta Falcons at New England Patriots, 1 p.m.

This is a gut check game for the Patriots as they have looked very average in their first two starts. If TE Tony Gonzalez has a big day, Atlanta has a good chance to win.

Kansas City Chiefs at Philadelphia Eagles, 1 p.m.

We are still wondering who will be behind center come Sunday; McNabb, Kolb, Garcia, Vick? Whoever gets the call it should still be enough to get a win over the Chiefs.

Green Bay Packers at St. Louis Rams, 1 p.m.

Green Bay’s offensive line has to do a better job of protecting Rodgers for the Packers to win. Fortunately they are playing the Rams this week who have recorded 1 sack in their first two games.

New York Giants at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 1 p.m.

The Giants will try and go 3-0 against a Bucs team that is ranked 31st in total defense, but 4th in total offense. Expect some points to be scored in this one with the Giants coming out on top.

New Orleans Saints at Buffalo Bills, 4:05 p.m.

The big question in this game is can the Bills keep New Orleans from scoring more than 40 points. Buffalo’s defense will slow them down, but not enough to win.

Chicago Bears at Seattle Seahawks, 4:05 p.m.

The health of Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck, who has a broken rib, is the key to this game. If he can play the Seahawks have a good chance to win at home.

Tennessee Titans at New York Jets, 4:15 p.m.

Can the Jets avoid a letdown against the best 0-2 team in the league? RB Chris Johnson will have to have another big day in order for the Titans to win.

Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders, 4:15 p.m.

Raider QB JaMarcus Russell is going to have to elevate his game in order for Oakland to win. If QB Kyle Orton continues to play well Denver could go to 3-0.

Miami Dolphins at San Diego Chargers, 4:15 p.m.

The Dolphins need to control the ball like they did last week against the Colts and tighten up their defensive secondary to get a win in San Diego.

Indianapolis Colts at Arizona Cardinals, 8:20 p.m.

This game comes down to an aerial showdown between the Colt’s Peyton Manning and Arizona’s Kurt Warner. The team completing more big plays should win this game.

Monday, September 28th

Carolina Panthers at Dallas Cowboys, 8:30 p.m.

The pressure will be on Dallas QB Tony Romo after last week’s disappointing performance against the Giants. Look for him to bounce back against Carolina and have a big day.

From a betting perspective lean towards 0-2 teams who are better than their record like Tennessee and Miami and 2-0 teams who are just that good like New Orleans, Baltimore, and the Giants.
