The Philadelphia Eagles look to avenge an earlier defeat to the NFC East division rival Washington Redskins and their former quarterback Donovan McNabb in this week’s matchup on Monday Night Football. Kickoff from FedEx Field is set for 8:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
Philadelphia is coming off its biggest win of the season after outdueling Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts 26-24 last Sunday. The Eagles did not cover as a 3 ½ point home favorite and the total went ‘over’ the 46 ½ point line. The win kept them one game in back of New York in the division, taking their record to 5-3 straight-up but dropping them to 3-5 against the spread.
Philadelphia is 3-1 SU on the road this season and 2-2 ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of their first eight games this year.
One of the biggest reasons for the Eagles success this season has been the reemergence of Michael Vick as one of the most talented and dynamic quarterbacks in the league today. Even after missing two games with a rib injury, he has thrown for 1,017 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions. He has also got it done with his feet, gaining 261 yards on 36 carries for an average of 7.3 yards per run. When you add in skill players like WR’s DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin along with RB LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia has one of the most talented offenses in the league.
Washington is coming off its bye week which could not have been better timed given the controversy that developed between head coach Mike Shanahan and his starting quarterback in the Redskins 37-25 loss to Detroit the week before. Shanahan decided to sit McNabb for the final two minutes of the game in favor of backup Rex Grossman. Only time will tell the long-term effects of this decision.
The loss dropped Washington to 4-4 SU and since it did not cover as a 2 ½ point road underdog against the Lions, it fell to 4-3-1 ATS. The Redskins are 2-2 SU at home this season and 2-1-1 ATS. The total has stayed ‘under’ in three of their last five games.
Granted, McNabb has played inconsistent in his first eight games, but he has been under constant pressure behind a very shaky offensive line. Overall, Washington is ranked 19th in total offense and 23rd in scoring; averaging 19.4 points per game. Defensively, things are even worse as this unit is ranked next to last in total defense; 18th against the run and 31st against the pass. It ranks 16th in points allowed; giving up an average of 21.2 per game.
Betting Trends:
Philadelphia is 10-4-1 ATS in its last 15 games in Washington and the road team is 6-1-1 ATS in the last eight games between these two teams. The Redskins are 5-12-1 ATS in their last 18 home games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in nine of their last 14 meetings.
These look like two teams heading in opposite directions for the second half of the season. Behind a healthy Vick to Jackson combination along with some help from the other skill players on this offense, the Eagles should have field day against their division foes.
