The New York Giants head down the Jersey turnpike to Philadelphia to play the Eagles on Sunday night in the first really big game of the year in the NFC East. Kickoff from Lincoln Financial Field is set for 8:20 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on NBC.
New York was rolling along until it ran into an inspired Dallas team last week. The Giants were blindsided 33-20 by the Cowboys in a game they were favored to win by 11 ½ points at home. The loss dropped them to 6-3 straight-up on the year and 5-4 against the spread. They come into this game tied with Philadelphia atop the division and this will be the first of two meeting between these two in the regular season.
The Giants have to quickly put last week’s loss behind them and get back to playing the dominant style of ball that led them to four straight victories prior to the Dallas game. Look for New York QB Eli Manning to try and exploit an Eagles’ secondary that has been prone to giving up big plays this season by pushing the ball downfield to WR Hakeem Nicks. Nicks leads the team with 735 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. They will be without their other star receiver Steve Smith for this game so Manning will most likely turn to Mario Manningham to fill the void.
Big plays have come to be synonymous with Philadelphia’s offense as QB Michael Vick and Co. are coming off one of the biggest offensive outputs team history. Numerous records fell in Monday night’s 59-28 annihilation of Washington in a game that was over by the start of the second quarter. The victory pushed the Eagles’ record to 6-3 SU and 4-5 ATS and in position to take the outright lead in the East with a win over New York.
Vick has been the story in Philly this season as he has reemerged as one of the most versatile and dynamic quarterbacks playing the game today. The most amazing stat has been his 62.7 completion percentage which is by far the best of his career. With weapons like WR’s DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin along with RB LeSean McCoy catching balls out of the backfield, it is easy to see why the Eagles have the most explosive offense in the league.
New York is 12-4 ATS in its last 16 games as a road underdog and the total has gone ‘over’ in its last eight games against the NFC East.
Philadelphia is 1-4 ATS in its last five home games and 2-5 ATS in its last seven games against the NFC East. The total has gone ‘over’ in the Eagles last five games overall.
Head-to-head, the Giants are 4-1 ATS in their last five games in Philadelphia and the underdog is 10-1 ATS in their last 11 meetings. The total has gone ‘over’ in eight of the last 12 games played in Philadelphia.
Everything in this matchup points to a high scoring nail-biter with the team who has the ball last coming away with the win. Philadelphia should get the straight-up win, but either way this ends up a one or two point game so take the Giants and the three points.
