The Houston Texans will try and keep pace in the AFC South with a second straight win when they travel to Lincoln Financial Field this Thursday night for a nationally televised showdown with Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the NFL Network.

Houston snapped a four game losing streak with a 20-0 shutout of Tennessee last Sunday. The Texans covered as a seven-point home favorite and the total stayed well ‘under’ the 45 point line. The victory raised Houston’s record to 5-6 both straight-up and against the spread and amazingly left it just one game out of first behind Jacksonville and Indianapolis in the division.

The other amazing aspect of this game was that the Texans’ defense actually shut a team out after giving up an average of 28.7 points in their first 10 games. Defensive breakdowns late in the fourth quarter was the primary reason for the four game losing streak as Houston repeatedly gave away games it really should have won.

Offensively, the Texans have remained solid for the most part, averaging 24 points per game, ranking them 10th in the league. QB Matt Schaub and WR Andre Johnson lead a passing attack that is averaging 235.2 yards per game and RB Arian Foster is the main force behind a seventh ranked rushing offense that is averaging 132.5 yards on the ground. Philadelphia ran into a highly motivated Chicago defense last week that was intent on shutting down QB Michael Vick and the Eagles high-powered offense. Vick still ended the day throwing for 333 yards and two TDs, but he was never able to get comfortable in the pocket or running outside it. The 31-26 loss as a three-point road favorite dropped Philadelphia back into a tie for first place in the NFC East with New York at 7-4 SU (5-6 ATS).

The main cause for concern with this team has been the inconsistent play of the defense as a hole. While the Eagles did sack Bears’ QB Jay Cutler four times, they gave up numerous big yardage gains on the ground and through the air. This has been a pattern all season long that is evident in their 23.4 points allowed per game average. Through 11 games one thing is very evident; Philadelphia certainly knows how to quickly score points, but it also knows how to quickly give them up as well.

Houston is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games as a road underdog, but is 2-5 ATS in its last seven games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of the Texans’ last seven games as an underdog and in four of their last six games on the road.

Philadelphia is 1-4 ATS in its last five games following a SU loss, but 4-1 ATS in its last five games in December. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of their last five games as a favorite and in six of their last seven games overall

There are two things to take into consideration for this game. First, the Eagles rarely lose two games in a row especially in a late season run towards the playoffs and second, the Texans’ defense is still extremely suspect, despite last week’s performance. Look for Philly to get back to its winning ways with another offensive explosion in Prime Time.
