UFC 178: Johnson vs. Cariaso
Date: September 27, 2014
Time: 10pm ET/7pm PT
Location: Las Vegas
Broadcast: Pay-per-view, Fox Sports 1, UFC Fight Pass

That said, there are sure to be fireworks – let’s take a look.

Main card (PPV at 10 p.m. ET)

UFC 178 Lines

Demetrious Johnson (20-2-1): -1250
Chris Cariaso (17-5-0): +825

Demetrious Johnson will defend his flyweight belt for the sixth time on Saturday night looking as dominant a champion as there is in the UFC. He takes on Chris Cariaso who rides a three fight winning streak into the bout.

Johnson has an incredible mix of speed, power and smarts – he puts it together perhaps better than anyone in the organization – nobody seems on his level in the right now. Enter Chris Cariaso who, at 33 years old is an OK – not great fighter.

Simply put it is going to take a great fighter on his best night to defeat Demetrious Johnson. While I hate the -1250, there is only one logical choice.

MMA Betting Pick: Demetrious Johnson -1250

UFC 178 Lines

Donald Cerrone (24-6-0): -110
Eddie Alvarez (25-3-0): -110

This bout has Fight of the Night written all over it – Bellator star Eddie Alvarez makes his UFC debut against a man that ducks nobody – Donald Cerrone. Cerrone brings a good kickboxing background to go along with 15 submission wins – he’s as tough as they come in the 155-pound division.

Alvarez comes in with some hype and rightfully so. He is a top 10 fighter in the UFC right away and may be just a fight or two away from a title shot. Bellator’s former champ brings a world class all around game – tremendous striking and wrestling, but has his hands full against Cerrone.

Cerrone is a machine – he never quits. Riding a four fight win streak, I like Cerrone to outwork Alvarez who has fought just once since 2012.

Donald is on a four fight win streak against some good fighters and enters Saturday night’s fight on fire.

MMA Betting Pick: Donald Cerrone -110

UFC 178 Lines

Dustin Poirier (16-3-0): +225
Conor McGregor (15-2-0): -265

A war of words finally comes to a head when Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor meet in the Octagon Saturday. These featherweights bring it each and every time out – fireworks should ensue. McGregor is coming off a TKO over Diego Brandao last time out while Poirier is coming off a TKO win against Akira Corassani.

Some think McGregor is a bit more hype than substance right now – me being one of them. Poirier is one tough dude. In a battle of the “B-level” fighters, I like the underdog to prevail.

MMA Betting Pick: Dustin Poirier +225

UFC 178 Lines

Tim Kennedy (18-4-0): +122
Yoel Romero (8-1-0): -142

Middleweights Tim Kennedy and Yoel Romeo meet in what is almost sure to be a wrestling contest – Romero is an Olympic silver medalist – as impressive a specimen as there is in MMA. Kennedy has the immense experience advantage and could minimize what Romero is certain to do – try to take this fight to the ground.

I’m not sure Kennedy has enough of a wrestling game to keep Romero from dictating what happens in this one. To me – Romero looks like a threat in the Middleweight Division even though he is 37 years old.

MMA Betting Pick: Yoel Romero -142

UFC 178 Lines

Cat Zingano (8-0-0): -265
Amanda Nunes (9-3-0): +225

It’s hard to imagine where Cat Zingano’s head is at – off an ACL tear and dealing with the recent suicide of her husband. It wasn’t that long ago that Zingano was the #1 contender to Rhonda Rousey’s title – she is a fighter. Amanda Nunes is no slouch either – her aggressiveness is unquestioned, her Muay Thai is impressive and her strikes are no joke

[dfads params=’groups=63753&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Both ladies will let the fists fly but I like Zingano to shake off the rust and win this one on emotion alone. She was the #1 contender for a reason – nobody’s beaten her yet and I can’t see it happening Saturday.

MMA Betting Pick: Cat Zingano -265

Undercard (FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET)

Dominick Cruz (19-1-0): -390 vs. Takeya Mizugaki (20-7-2): +325
Pick: Dominick Cruz -390

Jorge Masvidal (27-8-0): -355 vs. James Krause (21-5-0): +290
Pick: Jorge Masvidal -355

Patrick Cote (20-8-0): +280 vs. Stephen Thompson (9-1-0): -340
Pick: Patrick Cote +280

John Howard (22-9-0): -190 vs. Brian Ebersole (50-16-1): +165
Pick: Brian Ebersole +165

Undercard (UFC Fight Pass at 7 p.m. ET)

Jon Tuck (8-1-0): +175 vs. Kevin Lee (8-1-0): -205
Pick: Kevin Lee -205

Manvel Gamburyan (13-8-0): +165 vs. Cody Gibson (12-4-0): -190
Pick: Manvel Gamburyan +165
