CFL Picks – Calgary Stampeders vs. Montreal Alouettes

Week 18 CALGARY STAMPEDERS (9-7) vs. MONTREAL ALOUETTES (10-6)

Date/Time: Sunday, October 30, 1:00 PM ET
Venue: Percival Molson Stadium, Montreal, Quebec
Broadcast: TSN

Stampeders vs. Alouettes Betting Lines from betonline.com.

Spread: Alouettes -4 ½
Moneyline: OFF
Over/Under: 56 points

In what is one of two marquee matchups in the CFL in Week 18, the Calgary Stampeders, in desperate need of a win to remain in the hunt for a home playoff game, travel East to take on a Montreal team that fell into a tie for first in the East last week with their 26-25 loss at Winnipeg – in a game that they appeared to be in total control of. Both teams have a lot to play for on Sunday which makes this a very intriguing late-season matchup.

The Calgary Stampeders did their part last week – they beat a reeling Saskatchewan team to remain in striking distance of Edmonton and BC in the West. Drew Tate has seized the starting QB role from Henry Burris and is doing all he can to hang onto it. Tate completed 23 of 32 passes in his first career start last week while throwing one touchdown and two interceptions. With weapons like Nik Lewis, Ken-Yon Rambo and Romby Bryant, Tate could have some success against Montreal’s sketchy pass defense.

Calgary saw the return of Joffrey Reynolds last week – a return from Football oblivion. His presence, along with Jon Cornish gives the Stamps one of the best 1-2 punches out of the backfield in the league. If these two are touching the ball, Calgary is having success!   [ad-4437448]

The Montreal Alouettes played perhaps their worst game of the season last week and still they lost by only one point. Anthony Calvillo passed for only 199 yards while throwing three interceptions – this after throwing only five picks all season! Still, the league leader in passing yards and touchdowns is bound to bounce back. Calvillo isn’t the most prolific passer in pro football for no reason!

Jamel Richardson continues to be virtually unstoppable and Brandon Whitaker has been playing at a very high level the last few weeks. Montreal is due for a bounce back week – Calvillo simply doesn’t struggle two weeks in a row!

Betting Prediction: Drew Tate won in his debut last week and looked pretty good. But that was against Saskatchewan – Montreal is a totally different challenge. The Alouettes continue to be the highest scoring team in the CFL with Calgary, surprisingly not far behind. It has been a long time since the Alouettes had something to play for this late in the season and I think that their focus will be spot on. With an inexperienced quarterback opposing them, expect a veteran and elite Montreal squad to easily cover on Sunday.

Pick: Montreal Alouettes -4 ½

MONTREAL ALOUETTES (10-5) vs. WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (9-6)

In what is the most important of the CFL Week 17 games the Montreal Alouettes visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with first place in the Eastern Conference on the line. A win for Montreal would lock up the East and give them home field advantage in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

CFL Betting – Week 14 Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs Toronto Argonauts Predictions

The Battle of Ontario features two team that are both coming off wins from last week – the Tiger-Cats were very impressive in their 55-36 beat down of Calgary in Moncton and the Argos were less impressive in their uninspiring 25-24 win versus Winnipeg in a game that a late single point on a missed field goal was the difference.

CFL Week 12 – Toronto Argonauts vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders

TORONTO ARGONAUTS (2-8) vs. SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (3-7)
Date/Time: Saturday, September 17, 4:00 PM ET

Broadcast: TSN
Argos vs. Riders Betting Lines from betonline.com
Spread: Riders -7
Moneyline: Argos +250: Riders -300
Over/Under: 50 ½ points

A Battle of surprising Basement Dwellers is on tap as the first game of a CFL Saturday double-header. Toronto is fresh off getting swept in a two game series with BC while the Roughriders are coming off an impressive sweep of Eastern Division leading Winnipeg. Saturday’s clash is a classic example of two teams going it totally opposite directions.

Toronto turned to their supposed savior QB Steven Jyles last week, less than a week after letting the ineffective Cleo Lemon go. Not a whole lot changed for Toronto in the win column or on the score board – they had to settle for just two field goals in their loss at BC. But with a game under his belt and the fact that Saskatchewan has a notoriously poor pass defense, there is some amount of optimism for the Argos.

Saskatchewan was basically left for dead but has shown signs of life in their last two outings – back-to-back wins against the best team in the CFL in the first 10 weeks of the season. Let’s call it the Andy Fantuz factor! Since Ken Miller came back to the sidelines to coach the team, the Riders have looked totally different. Darian Durant certainly looks better and Wes Cates is finally getting involved in the offense. The defense, despite its critics played especially well last week in creating three sacks and intercepting Buck Pierce a staggering five times.

Finally, the Saskatchewan Roughriders look like the team that represented the West in the Grey Cup two years in a row!

Betting Prediction: The Saskatchewan Roughriders have won two straight games overall and have won five of their last seven meetings with the Argonauts. The Riders are rolling and the Argos are stuck in the garage. This game won’t be close folks – easy choice.

Pick: Saskatchewan Roughriders -7

CFL Football Handicapping | Week 9 CFL Power Rankings

CFL Power Rankings: Week 9

Last week was a quiet one for the Canadian Football League, with just four teams in action. It’s more of the same this week, with another four teams enjoying a bye.

Here’s a look at the league’s Week 9 CFL power ratings

1 (1). Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Winnipeg holds onto the top spot after getting a bye last week. The Blue Bombers have just a single loss this season and, at 6-1, lead Montreal by a game in the East Division.

The “D” has gotten a ton of credit for the hot start, and deservedly so, but the offense hasn’t been too bad either—Fred Reid is second in the CFL in rushing yards.

2 (2). Montreal Alouettes

Montreal was one of four teams with a bye last week. The Alouettes won back-to-back games heading into the week off, and they’re doing it just like you might expect—with offense. Anthony Calvillo has been typically brilliant; he leads the CFL with 14 touchdown passes and is second with 2095 passing yards.

3 (3). Calgary Stampeders

Another team with a bye… another team holding its spot from last week’s power rankings. Calgary has exploded in its past two games, racking up 77 points. Henry Burris has cranked up his game after a solid but unspectacular start, throwing four touchdowns, 639 yards and no interceptions in his past two outings.

4 (5). Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Hamilton rounds out the bye-week teams, all of which oddly either held ground or moved up. The Tiger-Cats haven’t been able to build much momentum, and at 4-3 they have some work to do in the East Division. Perhaps the week off will give them a chance to regroup and string together their second winning streak of the season.

5 (8). British Columbia Lions

The Lions hammered Edmonton 36-1 last week, and B.C. wound up with two CFL Player of the Week awards. Receiver Arland Bruce exploded for nine catches, 129 yards and two scores—in just his second game with the Leos, no less. Defensive tackle Aaron Hunt earned defensive honours after notching five tackles and three sacks. [ad-4437448]

6 (7). Toronto Argonauts

Toronto creeps up a spot after squeaking past Saskatchewan 24-18. The Boatmen have just two wins this season, but taking a win into their bye this week is massive. Of course, it would help if the Argos got to play the lowly Roughriders every week.

7 (4). Edmonton Eskimos

There’s no getting around it—the Eskimos are free falling. Ricky Ray has completely melted down, and he threw three interceptions in last week’s 36-1 embarrassment against British Columbia. That makes it three straight losses for Edmonton, which has scored just 21 points in the past three weeks—and only five points (five!) it its past two outings.

8 (8). Saskatchewan Roughriders

Woof. The Roughriders can’t get much worse at 1-7. They were competitive in last week’s 24-18 loss to the Argonauts, but competitive doesn’t mean squat—just ask Greg Marshall. Marshall was fired as head coach and replaced with VP-Football Operations Ken Miller.

Miller led the Roughriders to back-to-back Grey Cup appearances during a three-year stint as Saskatchewan’s head coach in 2008-2010.
