The Toronto Maple Leafs have quickly transformed into one of the true “gunslinger” teams in the league; that is, the Leafs ranks amongst the very top in goal scoring figures but have very little defensive prowess to report. They hit the road in Calgary with a 1.5-4 record in away games, not an ideal record.
Calgary, however, haven’t experienced much success at home this year with just a 3-7-0 record, suggesting they prefer the hotel life instead of home cooking, considering they’re 7-6-2 away from the Sattledome. Trade rumors have started to swirl in Calgary due to the slow start to the year.
As mentioned, Toronto is scoring at a strong clip, currently ranking second in the league in goals per game at 3.1 on average. The defensive side of their game is still a work in progress, currently sitting at 28th in the league while allowing 2.9 goals per game.
First overall pick, Auston Matthews, has performed as advertised and looks like the franchise center that the Leafs’ expected when investing their selection in the young star. Matthews has netted nine goals and 17 points across 21 games so far and shown flashes of brilliance, such as his four-goal debut.
The Leafs have a solid forward group who are producing a balanced attack, seeing six forwards all sitting with double-digit point totals through the first quarter of the year. Rookie winger, Mitch Marner, is tied for the team-lead in points with 18, and looks to be another important piece to build around, along with Matthews, William Nylander and defenseman, Morgan Reilly. All four of the aforementioned players were top-10 draft selections made by the Leafs in the past five years.
Goaltender Frederik Andersen owns a .911 SV% and a 2.97 GAA on the year, fine numbers that the Leafs are hoping will continue to improve as he adjusts to the new team and system. His 9-6-3 record is a positive sign that the Leafs are taking a step forward as a group.
Calgary is missing their star player, Johnny Gaudreau, from the lineup for the foreseeable future. Gaudreau sustained a finger injury and has been placed on the IR, sidelining their top scorer from a season ago, where he tallied 78 points in 79 games in his sophomore campaign.
His linemate, Sean Monahan, is evidently missing playing alongside Johnny Hockey. He’s tallied just nine points in 25 games this year, after scoring 27 goals and 63 points in 81 games in 2015-16. The Flames really need their young stars to start scoring, as veteran depth winger, Michael Frolik, currently leads the team in scoring with just 14 points.
Young, solid right-handed defenseman, Dougie Hamilton, leads the blueliners in Cow-Town with 12 points, tied for second in team points. He’s started to hear his name come up in trade rumors of late, as speculation starts to heat up that the Flames need a shake up and the blueline is their position of strength.
Brian Elliot has vastly underperformed in a Flames uniform, as he currently has a .885 SV% and 3.31 GAA on the year. He was acquired in exchange for a 1st round pick in the off-season, in a trade that looks worse and worse by the day the longer this awful streak continues. Back-up, Chad Johnson, is seeing more starts and owns a much more respectable .922 SV% and 2.23 GAA, to go along with a 7-4-1 record.

I kind of hope that Elliot starts in the crease for the Flames since it makes selecting the Over even that much easier. I like Toronto to both score and allow enough goals to make the threshold, especially if the goalie matchup turns into Elliot vs Jonas Enroth.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
As mentioned, Toronto is second in the league in goals per game and also second last in the league in goals against. The Flames missing Gaudreau certainly hurts, but the young forwards in Calgary should be able to pot a couple against a leaky Leafs squad.
